Purchase a Paver, Build A Park!

USCT Park Opens Nov. 13

On November 13, 2022 the United States Colored Troops Park will open on the grounds of the Cameron Art Museum becoming a public space for community healing and connection across lines of difference, one that is vital to the health of our region. The community is invited to help contribute to its creation by purchasing a paver honoring their loved ones that will line the entrance way of the park and on view for generations to come.

The USCT Park will enhance CAM’s standing as a trusted cultural gathering place for community learning and dialogue. The event marks the one year anniversary of the unveiling of Boundless, the public sculpture by artist Stephen Hayes that commemorates the United States Colored Troops and their fight for freedom. Now, the next step is to create a gathering space for the over 60,000 visitors from across the country who come to the CAM each year and the 8,000 school children who visit the museum on trips. USCT Park will become a community space for gathering, field trips, classes, workshops, storytelling, live music, and annual USCT living history events for years to come, in which the sculpture Boundless will be the centerpiece.

The purchase of a paver will help solidify the museum’s vision for the USCT Park which will be the first of its kind in North Carolina and in the nation, focused on the heroism of the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War.

With community support, the new USCT Park will be a central community space for important programming telling a little-known Civil War story whose impact can still be seen on the city today. Programming held at the USCT Park will promote social change, healing, and engagement within the continuum of this story with students (K-12, university, and community college), children, families, and the public.

This project will benefit a local, state-wide, and national audience for years to come.

The deadline for purchasing a paver is August 1, 2022.

Partner Portraits in Plaster

Instructor: Judith Chandler

Using plaster gauze, students will work with their partners and create a plaster portrait of each other. There will be 5+ layers of gauze to build a strong piece. The plaster will stay on the face for approximately 30 minutes. then removed and allowed to dry fully. For a more formal portrait, the surface can be layered with liquid plaster to create a specific texture or a smooth surface. Finishing may be as desired though most choose smooth sanding or spray painting. Once hard, the plaster will be removed and allowed to dry fully. It is expected that the plaster will remain white but there are options for adding humor or perhaps scary elements if desired.
