Michele Tejuola Turner (American, b. 1956)
Michele Tejuola Turner was born and raised in Detroit Michigan, the child of two Southern emigres. After graduating from the Cass Technical High School (Detroit) in 1974 and the Columbus College of Art and Design (Columbus, Ohio) in 1978, she worked in retail advertising and designed catalogs and other collateral for department stores. In the 1990s, she moved to North Carolina, where she established herself as a gourd artist. Michele Tejuola Turner: In Praise of Our Mothers was one of the opening exhibitions in 2002.

Black Resilience: Film, Tour, & Discussion 12-2 PM
The New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force is partnering with Cameron Art Museum and the New Hanover County Commission on African American Heritage History and Culture to bring our community a unique educational film screening experience. Resilience: the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope reveals how toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease as adults.
After the one hour film, stay for a tour and panel discussion. As we explore the themes of the film, we will highlight the work of Stephen Hayes as we tour Voices of Futures Past and Boundless while engaging in facilitated discussion. In honor of Women’s History month, we will also explore the work of important female artists in Twenty Years including Faith Ringgold, Beverly Buchanan and others.
Pre-registration recommended for the film screening and discussion. |
