CAM Announcement!

Heather Wilson Named

CAM's Executive Director

Breaking News! Heather Wilson, Cameron Art Museum’s current Interim Executive Director, has been named the new Executive Director by the museum’s Board of Trustees. Wilson will be the seventh director Cameron Art Museum has had in its 61-year history, leading the museum into its seventh decade.

Wilson has been an integral part of the CAM leadership operations since 2006 when she was hired as a Development Officer and was promoted to Deputy Director in 2019. Wilson led the museum’s most recent strategic planning process and procured numerous grants for the CAM, including grants from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and PNC Bank in support of the Boundless United States Colored Troops sculpture. She was the project director for the Boundless project, working closely with artist Stephen Hayes.

As Deputy Director, she led a needs assessment of CAM’s programming and has led the museum’s DEIA efforts. Wilson has authored numerous publications in support of CAM and has curated numerous projects over the years. Wilson holds a Master of Fine Arts from UNC-Wilmington, where she co-founded the nationally known literary journal, Ecotone. She received a BA from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, where she graduated with Highest Honors.

Since the retirement of Anne Brennan, the former museum head, at the end of March 2023, Wilson has been leading the institution as Interim Executive Director.

After an intensive search and review of a few well qualified candidates, our Search Committee was unanimous in selecting Ms. Wilson to lead the Cameron Art Museum into the future. Her vision, knowledge, expertise, and commitment to CAM and the Cape Fear Region assure us a level of continuity and progressive leadership moving forward.” - Gregory C. Miller,

CAM Board of Trustees Chair

From Cameron Art Museum

Executive Director Heather Wilson

Dear Friends of Cameron Art Museum,

I am beyond honored to accept this position as Executive Director of Cameron Art Museum. Over the past 16 years I have worked, first in the development office and then as Deputy Director, to grow CAM’s commitment to community engagement, emphasizing diversity, access, and inclusivity. Art is a common language, something that can bring us together across lines of difference and help us to find empathy and understanding. I look forward to serving you as the next Executive Director of Cameron Art Museum.

We have many exciting things in store in the coming weeks and months, but I hope first that you will join us for a celebratory drink and a toast to this new era at Cameron Art Museum on Thursday, June 22 at 5:30 pm in CAM Café as we open the new exhibition, LoveLet’s honor our past while raising a glass to our future, together.

With gratitude,

A Toast to the New Director

Love (June 22-October 8) examines this sometimes intense, often elusive emotion. True love, familial love, romantic love, self-love, platonic love, forbidden love, and lost love are all aspects of this universal emotion.

Through contemporary art, Love explores, celebrates, and looks deeply at these various aspects of love and connects us with our shared humanity. Love is an adaptation of the 2022 exhibition, What Is Left Unspoken, Love at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

Love includes work by Ghada Amer, Thomas Barger, Susanna Coffey, Alanna Fields, Andrea Galvani, Jeffrey Gibson, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Fritzi Huber, Rashid Johnson, Jana Vander Lee, Felicita Felli Maynard, William Selig, Dixon Stetler, Lien Truong, Michele Tejuola Turner, jinna valentine and Akram Zaatari. Loans for this exhibition are from Art Bridges and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the High Museum of Art, and private collections.
