CAM Donor Spotlight:

Andy and Hathia Hayes

Andy and Hathia Hayes are lifelong educators who share a passion for art. Their home in Wilmington is carefully curated with art that they have collected throughout their lives. The Hayes have also had a longstanding commitment to Cameron Art Museum, starting when they moved to the area over 40 years ago. The gift of works from their collection deepens CAM collection in meaningful ways.

Here's an excerpt of a conversation between CAM's Deputy Director Heather Wilson and Andy and Hathia Hayes.

Heather Wilson: We would not be the museum that we are without the two of you. And that you've chosen us as the home for a significant portion of your collection is so tremendous. And so, I just wanted to ask you, what do you hope to accomplish by giving this gift of your life's work, this collection to CAM?

Andy Hayes: Well, to me, the museum itself is an important part of our art interest and certainly mine….We came to Wilmington at a time when two important people in our lives were here. One was Alan Aiches, who was the first professional director of St. John’s Museum and we got to know him, and we worked very closely with him on dozens of exhibitions over time. My experience with him was very different from what most people ever have an opportunity to experience in the arts. Alan was a doer himself, and he and I would go pick up artwork from an artist or from collectors. We would install them, we would sand the walls, or we would paint the stands, or we would do anything. So, for me to get to work that closely in a museum with a director, a director at a time when that was essentially the art staff, there was no such thing as installers and so on. You did it all. And Alan allowed me to do that with him.

At that same time, Sam Hughes came to town, and Sam represented a kind of aesthetic interest and standard that I had never had the opportunity to be a part of before. We became very close friends with Sam, and I stood beside him as he died…He pressured the museum and his friends in every way that he possibly could to support that museum. And he was really influential in helping the museum get any significant works of art that it wanted, or he thought they needed. He’d buy them himself or he would work it around. But having the opportunity to be close to Sam and friends with Sam was an important part of being at the museum.

Hathia Hayes: That's why we have the Cassatts at Cameron.

Heather Wilson: What are your hopes for the future of your collection?

Andy Hayes: I think one of the things that I would like to think could happen is that how people who have not done much acquisition of arts or crafts might consider it as a result of hearing our story….A few years back we had an exhibition that was focused on collecting. So, we had works from our collection there in the museum and we had a special invitational dinner to introduce collectors to each other and to, or people who would like to be collectors…But someone at that meeting asked us, “how do you become a collector?”

Hathia Hayes: Buy one piece.

Andy Hayes: Yes, start now and in 45 years from now, you're going to have a big collection.

A Different Kind of

Picture Book

It's a great yet simple way to save special photos. Our process will be to make an accordion fold book with colorful papers and fill the pages with your photocopied pictures. We will explore ways to make our books unique and personal with cutouts and embellishments.

Construct a coil bowl or planter and leave the surface in rhythmic layers or paddle the form to a smooth, flat finish.
