Spring is in full bloom here at CAM. The new season features two incredible exhibitions: The Game Changers: Diebenkorn, Frankenthaler, and Rauschenberg and We Belong Here: The Gutierrez Collection. Music is in the air with Jazz at CAM, the return of Sunset Performance Series at Boundless, and live music in CAM Cafe. CAM After Dark returns with its series of insightful talks and artist conversations. Celebrate resilience with a CAM Community Day Saturday, March 15, slow down at CAM with Slow Art Dayon April 5, and then kick off May right with Design NC May 8 & 9. Here's a preview!

ARTThe Game Changers expands viewers’ appreciation of prints in CAM’s permanent collection with the generous inclusion of works by Frankenthaler, Diebenkorn, and Rauschenberg from renowned American museum and arts institutions including: Akron Art Museum, Art Bridges, Cincinnati Art Museum, Des Moines Art Center, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, North Carolina Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum.

We Belong Here: The Gutierrez Collection is the first public exhibition of a collection of contemporary art built over the past decade by North Carolina based collectors, Onay Gutierrez and Jeff Childers.


This exhibition features over 40 works by over 40 international contemporary artists including Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Jerrell Gibbs, JeffreyGibson, Ayana Jackson, HayvKahraman, Kaws, Jun Kaneko, David LaChapelle, Beverly McIver, ZaneleMuholi, Carmen Neely, Zohra Opoku, Angel Otero, Maia Cruz Palileo, Tavares Strachan, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley among many others.

MUSICJazz at CAM finishes out the season strong with the Dominican Jazz Project this Thursday, March 6 at 7 PM followed by an unforgettable evening on Thursday, April 3 with The Jazz Legacy Project presents Billie Holiday: God Bless the Child feat. Maria Howell. Tickets for both HERE.


Say goodbye to Close to Home with The Spirit of Jazz in NC: John Brown and Romare Bearden on Saturday, March 22 with a performance by John Brown, the Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University, a screening of Rodrigo Dorfman's One Night in Kernersville a documentary about Brown followed by a Q&A.

The Sunset Performance Series, sponsored by PNC Bank, outside in front of Boundless kicks off with a special Saturday session on March 22 at 3 PM with musician Sam Fribush. Then the series goes back to Thursdayevenings at 7 PM with LeJuane (El’Ja) Bowens on April 17 and Christa Gabrielle Faison on May 15. Sunset Performance Series are Free with a $5 suggested donation.

SPECIAL EVENTSThe spring season of CAM After Dark, a series of insightful conversations with experts, curators, and artists, begins on March 13 with former CAM Executive Director Anne Brennandiscussing artist Elisabeth Chant and her work. Curator Ben Billingsley discusses The Game Changers on April 10 followed by artist Beverly McIver discussing her work in We Belong Here and more on May 1.

CAM is FREE all day on Saturday, March 15. We are proud to partner with the New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force and others to celebrate the different ways the arts can support resilience in children and families with a CAM Community Day. All activities are FREE for all ages and abilities.

Close to Home (November 19, 2024 – March 23, 2025) is a celebration of CAM’s collection featuring works by artists with a connection to our state, our region, our home. Join us as we explore images of people and places that evoke the varied spirit of our community. Beloved familiar works are joined by hidden treasures in a showcase of artistic voices; a collective search for the meaning of home. Helen Frankenthaler, Richard Diebenkorn, and Robert Rauschenberg created essential works in the mid-20th century, forever changing what American art would look like and what it could mean to us.


The Game Changers exhibition expands viewers’ appreciation of prints in the permanent collection with the generous inclusion of works by Frankenthaler, Diebenkorn, Rauschenberg, and their contemporaries from renowned American museum collections.

Elisabeth Chant


Elisabeth Chant (February 7, 2025 – April 27, 2025)

North Carolina artist Elisabeth Chant (1865-1947) made an indelible mark on Wilmington’s art community. She became known for her vibrant landscapes and scenes of the North Carolina coast. Chant also created decorative designs and explored mysticism and spiritual themes, which informed her artistic style. She was instrumental in developing Wilmington’s cultural landscape, founding art classes, mentoring young artists, and establishing a community art association.

This exhibition explores the people and landscapes of Chant’s world.

We Belong Here: The Gutierrez Collection is the first public exhibition of contemporary art collected over the past decade by North Carolina collectors Onay Gutierrez and Jeff Childers. In their words: “The Gutierrez Collection creates a space for dialogue and understanding across diverse identities and perspectives.”


Featuring over 40 works by international contemporary artists, it focuses on 21st-century pieces that engage with social, political, cultural, and personal issues.

LONG POSE FIGURE PAINTING

For the artist desiring a longer pose to complete their paintings!

Paint a costumed model, full or partially draped. Enjoy a facilitated workshop with a different female model each day. Paint a single pose for the entire day, or two with each model. Some figure drawing or painting is recommended; this is self-guided, no instruction, just facilitation with the costume and lighting.

STORIES WE CARRY: VETERANS WRITING WORKSHOP

Instructor: Dina Greenberg

There is nothing more powerful or more sacred than the Stories We Carry. In this six-week narrative/visual art workshop for military veterans, we will use in-class writing prompts to bring your stories to the forefront. Students will also learn the art of Shodõ, an ancient form of Japanese calligraphy, through writing and calligraphy, the course encourages participants to explore their interior life, forge connections in this small-group, as well as with our community at large.
