Black Lives Do Matter at CAM

Programming Highlights

Black Lives Do Matter at CAM a public art installation opened on January 14 with a community day celebration. Greg Miller, Chair, Board of Trustees, Cameron Art Museum, welcomed everyone that morning and the crowd heard remarks from Mayor Bill Saffo, Councilman Clifford Barnett, Councilman Kevin Spears, New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple and Eighteen Forward’s Art Director Greyson Davis.

This public art installation gives the museum the opportunity to highlight all of the artists involved in the installation as well as unique opportunity to create educational programming in partnership with Eighteen Forward’s Art Director Greyson Davis.

Upcoming programming includes a Book Talk with Bertha Todd on February 23 discussing her book Reflections on a Massacre and a Coup. In this book, Todd shares how a group of citizens in Wilmington, North Carolina came together to create the centennial commemoration of the 1898 Massacre, eventually forming the 1898 Centennial Commission (now the 1898 Memorial Foundation). Todd recounts how it all came to be, including the creation of 1898 Memorial Park in 2008. Click HERE to register!

Resiliency Weekend at CAM is Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19 with events and film screenings all weekend showcasing how the arts support resiliency in our community.


As part of the Resiliency Kids @ CAM that Saturday, March 18, Eighteen Forward's Art Director Greyson Davis will be leading a hands-on art activity inspired by themes of resilience and the Black Lives Do Matter art installation.

On Thursday, March 23 CAM presents Black Lives Do Matter Panel Discussion that asks "what does it mean to be a change maker? Join Art Director Greyson Davis, artists from Eighteen Forward, and leaders in our community for a passionate discussion on constructive and creative actions that help move us forward.

See Black Lives Do Matter at CAM on view through May 28 and view these eight-foot-high letters up close as you meander through CAM’s outdoor space.


Black Lives Do Matter at CAM joins the museum’s other outdoor works, including the recently opened PNC USCT Park featuring the Stephen Hayes designed sculpture Boundless, activating the museum's 9.4-acre grounds.


Through programming and various on site materials, Black Lives Do Matter at CAM offers visitors an opportunity to delve deeper into the work’s meaning with hopes of creating greater understanding and empathy.

Liza Roberts has collected the stories of a variety of working artists in North Carolina – including CAM’s very own September Krueger! Copies of her book are available in the museum shop before and during her talk on

Everyone wants to fly! We will read Owen the Octopus about an octopus who wants to fly like the birds. We’ll explore our installation Flying School and create our own flying-inspired works of art.

Author Liza Roberts presents a panel discussion on the launch of her new book: Art of the State: Celebrating the Visual Art of North Carolina. Artists Christina Lorena Weisner of Kitty Hawk and Ben Knight of Kinston will join the author for a discussion on current trends on our state. Roberts’ book showcases the creation, collection, and celebration of art in all its richness and diversity. Roberts provides fascinating historical context, such as the influence of Black Mountain College, while weaving together the profiles of individual artists, compelling interviews, and beautiful full-color photography to tell the story of the state's evolution through the lens of its art world and some of its most compelling figures.

The repertoire of this high energy group consists of authentic Latin Jazz made famous by such famous Latin jazz musicians as Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Buena Vista Social Club, and Dizzy Gillespie plus original tunes by Gelb, Anderson and Kleindienst.


La Fiesta’s first recording entitled La Fiesta Latin Jazz Quintet was released in September of 2016 and in 2022 they released Latin Jazz Pandemic Suite.

Glen and Florence Hardymon welcome visitors into the Hughes Wing to discuss work from their collection now on view as part of Promise.


Promise highlights promised gifts from the collections of Glen and Florence Hardymon and Andrew and Hathia Hayes, as well as new acquisitions and other promised gifts to CAM’s collection. Artists featured in this exhibition include Rick Beck, Lisa Clague, Christina Cordova, Jim Dine, Maud Gatewood, Susan Taylor Glasgow, Sol Lewitt, Juan Logan, Beverly McIver, Joan Miro, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, Hiroshi Sueyoshi, and Steffen Thomas.

Printmaking

Printmaking Studies: Lithography Made Easy

Instructor: Antionette Vogt

Lithography is a planographic printmaking method. Unlike the relief or intaglio printing process, there are no raised or carved out areas. Printing is done from a flat surface using the repelling properties of oil and water. In this class you will learn a simple method using common household products instead of the chemicals used in traditional lithography.

Ceramic Figure Sculpture Workshop

With the observation of a live model to inspire us we will form a mound of clay into figurative sculpture. Work small and create individual body parts or create the full form. The choice is yours. All skill levels are welcome.

Paint Like the Masters: Van Gogh a Go Go

Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle

This 4-Week course pulls inspiration from noted post-Impressionist masters, including Van Gogh, Cezanne and Gauguin, with a focus on color and brush-handling confidence. This is an opportunity to explore abstract color, expressive brush strokes and texture, and invigorate your painting practice.

Hammered Copper Hearts

Instructor: Renato Abbate

Make and take the perfect gift for your sweetheart this Valentine's Day: a handmade hammered heart-shaped dish with your loving message stamped inside. Renato Abbate was born in Italy and transplanted yearly till 1999. He currently lives in Wilmington and loves the port city. He is always looking for ways to push his work further using mixed media and clay. Innovation is his inspiration.
