CAM Exhibition Spotlight:

Love Opens at CAM

Cameron Art Museum is thrilled to present Love, a new exhibition that examines this sometimes intense, often elusive emotion. True love, familial love, romantic love, self-love, platonic love, forbidden love, and lost love are all aspects of this universal emotion.

Through contemporary art, Love explores, celebrates, and looks deeply at these various aspects of love and connects us with our shared humanity. Love is an adaptation of the 2022 exhibition, What Is Left Unspoken, Love at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

In the summer of 2022, former Executive Director Anne Brennan and Director of Collections and Exhibitions Robert Unchester visited the exhibition What Is Left Unspoken, Love at the invitation of Curator Michael Rooks at the High Museum of Art. Inspired by this thought-provoking exhibition, the curatorial team decided to work with the High Museum of Art to create an adapted version of What Is Left Unspoken, Love at CAM.

Sharing this exhibition, with the way it embraces the complexity and nuance of what it is to love, felt particularly powerful at this moment in time when the world can be so fractured and divided. Love is an exhibition to bring us together and to remind us of our shared humanity.

Love features three incredible works on loan from the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, including powerful videos from Andrea Galvani and Rashid Johnson along with a beautiful beaded punching bag from Jeffrey Gibson titled

The Love You Give Is The Love You Get which as curator Micheal Rooks writes,“suggests that love is a form of conditioning that requires practice and discipline and is contingent upon reciprocity, necessarily casting uncertainty on the notion of “unconditional love.’”

Loans for this exhibition are from Art Bridges and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the High Museum of Art, and private collections.

This is the first time that Cameron Art Museum has presented the work of influential conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (American, b. Guáimaro, Cuba, 1957; died Miami, Florida, 1996). Love includes Untitled, (LA), 1991 from Gonzalez-Torres, on loan from Art Bridges and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, a work consisting of often colorful cellophane wrapped hard candies which have become known as “candy spills.” Gonzalez-Torres transforms the stark language of minimalism to elicit reflections on love and loss. As individual pieces of candy are taken from the installation and consumed, the gradual depletion of the spill serves as a metaphor for absence, transience, and the inevitability of loss, while the replenishment of the candy each day extends the metaphor as an act of remembrance and the continuation of love after death.

The CAM curatorial and programming team have commissioned Love artist Frizti Huber to create Little Love Letters, a site specific installation outside the Hughes Wing, which invites visitors to share their love story with other museum visitors. Huber writes, “Love, which is easy to feel, but oftentimes difficult to express, can find its way through writing. The written word is a path to making the intangible tangible. We engage in conjuring our emotions and sentiments by pursuing this mode of expression for any, and all, forms of love. This space is an invitation to do just that.”

Love opens to exclusively CAM Members on Thursday, June 22 with member only tours at 11 AM, 1 PM and 5 PM. Click HERE to register or visit CameronArtMuseum.org.

Double the Plate, Double the Fun! Drypoint and Monotype

Instructor: Donna Moore and Antionette Vogt

Incorporating the two techniques of Drypoint and Monotype leads to unique and interesting works of art. In this one day workshop students use two plates to create one image. First a repeatable image is created on a drypoint plate. Using your own original drawing/photo or one provided, images can be easily traced onto the clear acrylic plate. A second process called a monotype adds color. Students experiment with color mixing and layering, incorporating stencils, and creating textures. Both plates are printed on top of each other to create the final one-of-a-kind image. Work abstractly or realistically, no experience needed. Experiment and have fun, the possibilities are endless!
