CAM Exhibition:

Black Lives Do Matter at CAM

Opens Saturday with FREE Admission!

Black Lives Do Matter at CAM opens this Saturday, and we're celebrating with a CAM Community Day! That means FREE admission to the museum galleries & all events that day!

Join us as we celebrate all the artists who've contributed to this public art installation and learn more about their work! We've partnered with the arts collective Eighteen Forward to present Black Lives Do Matter at CAM, an eighteen-letter installation displayed on the museum grounds.

The festivities begin at 11 AM with remarks by Greg Miller, Chair, Board of Trustees, Cameron Art Museum, Mayor Bill Saffo, Councilman Clifford Barnett, Councilman Kevin Spears and Eighteen Forward’s Art Director Greyson Davis

After the remarks, Greyson Davis and Black Lives Do Matter artists will offer a tour and discussion of the installation. At 1 PM, we welcome Rebecca Trammel, Lead Advocate and Founder of Community Conversations, as she invites the community to join in a line dance to the song “Jerusalema”. Trammel uses the dance as a way of bringing people together to promote awareness for equity and excellence in education.

The opening of Black Lives Do Matter at CAM coincides with Peace Flag Weekend at CAM which honors Dr. King’s iconic “I Have a Dream Speech” and flags will be created in CAM’s Pancoe Education center from 10 AM to 2 PM. Flag creation continues on the next day, Sunday January 15 from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Black Lives Do Matter on display at Jervay Memorial Park

Black Lives Do Matter at CAM gives the museum the opportunity to highlight all of the artists involved in the installation as well as unique opportunity to create educational programming in partnership with Eighteen Forward’s Art Director Greyson Davis.

Upcoming programming includes a Book Talk with Bertha Todd on February 23 discussing her book Reflections on a Massacre and a Coup. In this book, Todd shares how a group of citizens in Wilmington, North Carolina came together to create the centennial commemoration of the 1898 Massacre, eventually forming the 1898 Centennial Commission (now the 1898 Memorial Foundation). Todd recounts how it all came to be, including the creation of 1898 Memorial Park in 2008.

Resiliency Day at CAM on March 18 in which Greyson Davis will be leading a hands-on art activity inspired by themes of resilience and the Black Lives Do Matter art installation.

On Thursday, March 23 CAM will host “What It Means to Be a Changemaker”, a panel discussion hosted by Greyson Davis along with artists from Black Lives Do Matter and community members.

Through programming and various materials, Black Lives Do Matter at CAM will offer visitors an opportunity to delve deeper into the work’s meaning with hopes of creating greater understanding and empathy.

The gallery guide will offer an opportunity for the public to read about each artist involved in the installation and will also feature a list of books recommended by Cameron Art Museum staff. There will be signage near the installation with a QR code that will direct visitors to Eighteen Forward’s website with more information on the project and artists involved.

Visitors are encouraged to view these eight-foot-high letters up close as they meander through CAM’s outdoor space. Black Lives Do Matter at CAM joins the museum’s other outdoor works, including the recently opened PNC USCT Park featuring the Stephen Hayes designed sculpture Boundless, activating the museum's 9.4-acre grounds.

Celebrate the Black Lives Do Matter artists with us on Saturday. Black Lives Do Matter at CAM, a public art installation, will be on view through May 28.

Bobbi says, "Great wealth is not necessary to build an admirable art collection. Sometimes, time and place are just as important – as well as appreciation, education, passion, luck, and persistence play a role."
