| CAM Event Spotlight: Resiliency Weekend at CAM |

| Join us this weekend for Resiliency Weekend at CAM. This two-day event is filled with family activities, film screenings, dance, and discussions that celebrate how the arts support resiliency.
The weekend kicks off with Resiliency Kids @ CAM presented by Excite Credit Union on Saturday, March 18. Beginning at 10 am, enjoy a morning of arts and resiliency with your family. Cameron Art Museum, New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force, and other area organizations come together to offer a wide variety of art projects, performances, and interactive collaborations to learn about the resiliency of individuals and our community. CAM hosts community tables that will provide information about community organizations and the resources they offer.
Join us on Sunday, March 19 for an afternoon of documentaries and short films that showcase the different ways resiliency can be demonstrated in communities and individuals. Each film followed by a brief discussion and Q & A. |

Saturday, March 18
10:15-10:30 AM Mini music class with Brooklyn Arts Academy Discover different musical instruments and ways to express yourself with music.
10:30-11 AM Interactive performance with Turning the Wheel Discover the pleasure of movement games as they inspire your creativity, make you smarter and build resilience. Fun for all ages and abilities!
11 AM-12:30 PM Seven Seas of ResilieNCy with BlackBox Dance Theatre (Ages 10 and above) If you are needing to be resilient, it often means that something bad has happened. However, maybe bad events in the past aren’t necessarily bad for the future. Resilience offers people the ability to recover from setbacks, to adapt, move forward, and even experience growth. ResilieNCy invites participants to share their personal stories of adversity, change, loss, worry, and risk, and find the support of their community to keep MOVING.
12:30-1 PM Artist discussion of Black Lives Do Matter with Greyson Davis Join Black Live Do Matter art director, Greyson Davis, on-site to learn about the art installation, its message and the artists who contributed.

Ongoing 10 AM-1 PM Art activities led by Dream Center for Art Education apprentices Izzie Vasquez will guide participants in a multi-media collaborative collage project. Participants will discuss resiliency, creating collage work inspired by their discussion while learning collage techniques.
Hudson Cummings will guide participants in a collaborative newspaper project where guests express what resiliency means to them.
Cammeron Batanides will guide participants in a collaborative tissue paper painting where guests are prompted to express (using abstract color) a time in their lives when they were forced to be resilient.
Ongoing from 10 AM-1 PM Basketball activity and train set-up with Positive Parenting Programs “When you don’t make the goal or happen to slip off the tracks, adjust your plan and try again!” Learn more about Circle of Parents, Parents as Teachers, and Triple P Program offered through Smart Start of New Hanover County.
Ongoing 10 AM-1 PM Storytime with Miss Bobbi Miss Bobbi will be available in the story corner with some of our favorite books for young children. Stop by for a little quiet time. All children will receive a free copy of The Year We Learned to Fly and Freedom in Congo Square, through our collaboration with UNCW Office of the Arts and 2022-23 NEA Big Read programs. |

| 2 PM BlackBox Dance Theatre Performance (Free with museum admission; registration required) Black Box Dance Theatre, known for their deeply human and physically compelling dance, is a leader in the field of Healing Art and Healthy Community Building. This workshop and performance bring the very best of their artistry to the classroom and the stage. ResilieNCy invites participants to share their personal stories of adversity, change, loss, worry, and risk, and find the support of their community to keep MOVING. Dance is a natural connector of people, purpose, and passion, and our hard work should be celebrated and literally lifted up as an example of beauty and power. |

| 12-1 PM Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope
Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the documentary Resilience reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience, however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

| 2-2:30 PM THE BLACK ANGELS: A NURSE'S STORY The extraordinary story of 300 African American nurses known as The Black Angels. Hailed out of Staten Island, New York at Seaview Hospital,the black angels traveled from many states to care for patients with tuberculosis when there was no cure and white nurses refused. Seaview hospital was the largest sanitorium for tuberculosis in the 1940's and it held over 2000 patients. It would become the birthplace for clinical trials for the cure of tuberculosis, led by Dr. Edward H. Robitzek.
This story gives homage to those African American nurses, their contributions to medicine, research and science. We introduce you to Black Angel, Marjorie Tucker Reedand her journey through a time of segregation, and one of the deadliest pandemics in the history of the United States.This film is her last interview before her death.

Educator Resources Closing the Gap with Arts Integration: Professional Development Workshop for Educators and Parents of Students in Grades K-8 Thursday, March 16, 2023, 4-7 PM Free for educators in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, and Sampson counties
Deepen your understanding of CAM’s USCT public sculpture Boundless through the lens of history, poetry, and movement. Learn what arts integration is and how you can employ it in your classroom. These workshops are designed to teach educators how to use the arts to teach core curriculum and help close the achievement gap through active learning strategies that engage all learners. Participating educators will receive a certificate of completion to submit to their respective counties for CEU credit consideration. |

Blackbox Dance Theatre uses dance as a catalyst for meaningful human interactions, powerful storytelling, and transformative art-making. Known for their non-fiction accounts of the world, the troupe has expertise in making dances that are relevant and inspirational to audiences of all ages. It matters who is dancing and what you are dancing about: this modern dance company includes a hip hop dancer, a ballerinas, and a Purple Heart Army veteran all adding to the artistry on stage. |
