Known as an art curator dedicated to community building and engaging audiences across generations from every walk of life, Michael Rooks joined the High Museum of Art as Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art in January 2010.

We will read I Like Myself / Me Gusta Como Soy. We will explore the art in the museum together, and create artwork inspired by our book and exhibitions. Our book will be read in both English and Spanish, and a Spanish-speaking staff member will offer translation of the gallery exploration and art project instructions.

Philip Gerard: Words and Music

Join us for an afternoon coffeehouse gathering in honor of Philip Gerard’s book release: Words and Music: An Album of a Life in Words and Song. Enjoy readings from Gerard’s memoir while listening to the acoustic sounds of Whiskey Creek Revival.


Philip Gerard was a historian, professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the author of 17 books, including Cape Fear Rising. His essay collection, The Patron Saint of Dreams, was awarded the 2012 North American Gold Medal for Essay and Creative Nonfiction by the Independent Publisher (“Ippy”).

A young Philip Gerard dreamed of one day recording an album. Many years later renowned author Philip Gerard not only made it happen but documented his journey along the way.


Words & Music is the memoir he penned shortly before his passing. Join us this Saturday for a musical afternoon coffeehouse gathering in honor of the release of this book.

Paper Clay Workshop

Learn to create bas-relief art using air dried paper clay on boards. This is a fun process, and you will create interesting, unique art. The result is a wood carved effect that will leave your friends wondering how you made it! Patterns will be provided, or you can adapt your own ideas! Adult: All Levels -

Life Drawing: Large Format Workshop

Instructor: Donna Moore

Exercise all the fundamentals of expressive figurative drawing in a real stretch - Life Size! - Expansive gestural warm-ups lead to single pose 6' x 42" format.

Floral Watercolors

Instructor: Janice Castiglione

The classroom will be filled with floral set ups all around the room. Students will be able to choose a floral design on the first day and changing location on the second day. Florals can be photographed for future paintings. Adult: All Levels -
