10 AM-5 PM Learn about the lives of USCT with reenactors from Battery B and the 1st USCT out of D.C.
11 AM Battle of Forks Road Documentary Talk with Representative from 1st USCT Reenactors out of D.C. The Battle of Forks Road documentary looks closely at the story of this Civil War skirmish that led to the fall of Wilmington, focusing on the victory of the United States Colored Troops and the significant impact they made in the Cape Fear Region.
12:30 PM Legacy Short Film Legacy is a short film chronicling the oral histories of the descendants of the United States Colored Troops by filmmaker Adam Alphin. The film paints a more complicated picture of this story than might be seen at first glance, exploring the lives of the Black, white, and Indigenous men who fought at the Battle of Forks Road where Cameron Art Museum now stands. Legacy captures the resilience of these men, the strength of the communities they built, and the impact that they have had on our region, our state, and our country. This film continues the work of Boundless, the sculpture by American artist Stephen Hayes that was installed on the museum’s grounds in 2021. |

Curating Ghosts: Abolition, US Colored Troops, and the Future of Haunted Memory examines the rich legacy of the US Colored Troop embodied commitment to, and bodily risk for, the cause of revolutionary abolitionism. Through a photographer’s lens, revolutionary theorist Steve Núñez reflects on Stephen Hayes’ Boundless installation at CAM as a shining example of the historical diligence and epistemic integrity required to reckon with the ongoing legacies of the violence central to capitalist systems. Join us for a discussion in the Monument exhibition with art historian Ewa Matyczyk, PhD. Ewa’s research and teaching explores the social and political context surrounding art, asking important questions around commemoration and sometimes omission of histories.
Ewa Matyczyk is Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. She holds a PhD in the History of Art and Architecture from Boston University, and an M.A. in Art History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. |

Monument takes inspiration from Boundless, the public sculpture on Cameron Art Museum’s grounds by Stephen Hayes honoring the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and their fight for freedom. Through their work, artists Radcliffe Bailey, Sonya Clark, Willie Cole, Stephen Hayes, Juan Logan, Alison Saar, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Kara Walker, and others create a dialogue acknowledging, questioning, and confronting the idea of commemoration in the built environment in the United States. |

In Stay in the Light, South Carolina artist Charles Edward Williams draws inspiration from historical photography of the Civil Rights movement, offering a contemporary response to social and political issues of the past and present. His paintings and installation works incorporate a strong use of color and gesture, inviting a focus on human emotion and our connectedness and commonality. Stay in the Light includes new work created for this exhibition, as well as work from Williams’ Sun and Light series. |
