CAM Event Spotlight!

NC Black Film Festival welcomes Pam Grier to CAM!

20230518_PROGRAMS_NCBlackFilmFestival image

We are looking forward to hosting both the opening and closing nights of the

20th anniversary of the North Carolina Black Film Festival (NCBFF), showcasing the best in Black cinema, taking place around Wilmington May 18-21.

We are excited to welcome actress

Pam Grier to the museum on May 18 for the opening night Cinemixer and screening of Grier's 1974 classic Foxy Brown!

During the reception, NCBFF presents Grier with their Lifetime Achievement Award along with a Q&A session hosted by Rhonda Bellamy with this legendary actress, followed by a screening of Foxy Brown.

Foxy Brown released in 1974 starring Pam Grier

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina,

Pam Grier relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1969.

During her tenure at American International Pictures (AIP), she emerged as a prominent figure in early 1970s Blaxploitation cinema, portraying fearless and empowered women, starting with her role in Jack Hill’s Coffy (1973). Advertised as the "baddest one-chick hit-squad that ever hit town!" in the film trailer, Coffy became a commercial success, with Grier becoming the first African-American female to lead an action film, in contrast to the male protagonists featured in previous Blaxploitation movies.

Renowned film critic Roger Ebert described Grier as an actress with a "beautiful face and astonishing form" who exuded a "physical life" absent in other actresses.

Grier continued to play similar characters in AIP movies such as Foxy Brown (1974), Friday Foster, and Sheba, Baby (both 1975).

In Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, Grier returned to the forefront of the film industry, with the movie explicitly honoring her '70s Blaxploitation work. In 1997, Grier received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress and was also nominated for Best Actress in a Performance by the Screen Actors Guild for her role in Jackie Brown.

Additionally, in 2011, Grier earned an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Langston University, a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Maryland University Eastern Shore, the Golda Meir Leadership Award, and the Entertainment AIDS Alliance Visionary Award.

Festival Programmer, Brandon Hickman says, “Pam Grier deserves every honor we can give her. She represents an entire generation of black actresses that were not seen often...her involvement in the Blaxploitation films begins the evolution of roles for black women in Hollywood from slaves to detectives”.

“Pam Grier is an icon in American Cinema and paved the way for black women in the industry. It is an honor to have her with us to celebrate 20 years in Black Independent Film”, says Festival Director, Charlon Turner Everett. “We have wanted to honor her for some time, and not many people realize that she is from North Carolina. We are so excited to award Pam Grier the Lifetime Achievement Award in Film and to partner with the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County to bring her to the city of Wilmington”.
