In our latest 1776 Series essay, Professor David Azerrad of Hillsdale College argues that the claim that “systemic racism” is America’s defining feature is untrue. Though not denying the presence of racism throughout American history, Azerrad notes that considering the Declaration of Independence’s dedication to the principle of natural human equality and the colorblind principles of the Constitution, our nation from the very beginning was set upon an anti-slavery foundation. According to Azerrad, the irony of the modern “anti-racist” argument is that “America has pulled off the amazing feat of purging its laws, institutions, and culture of racism—all in the interest, of course, of perpetuating racism.”

In the latest article in his continuing series on civic institutions, RealClear American Civics editor Mike Sabo writes about the important work of the Alexander Hamilton Institute of the Study of Western Civilization (AHI) and its current president and co-founder, Robert Paquette. AHI offers a multitude of conferences and programming that is centered on the idea that institutions of civic learning should instill “the necessary self-discipline that prevents liberty from turning into licentiousness.”

At Law & Liberty, Professor Daniel J. Mahoney discusses the launch of the “Liberty and Justice for All” project with Richard Reinsch. Mahoney says that writing an open letter inviting scholars, academics, and American citizens to affirm their belief in the importance of American institutions became necessary in light of violence and riots over the summer. He argues that too many individuals and institutions have either affirmed those destructive actions or gone silent due to the prospect of facing retaliation.

A new video from 1776 Unites features black Americans speaking out against rioting and looting that have taken place in cities across the nation. Many have decried the violence that has predominantly affected black businesses and homes. This video is part of the broader efforts of 1776 Unites to “celebrate black excellence, reject victimhood culture, and showcase the millions of black Americans who have prospered by embracing the founding ideals of America.”
