Last week’s curation at RealClear’s American Civics portal celebrates our nation’s 248th birthday. At The Fulcrum, Jack Miller Center President Hans Zeiger looks at the Fourth of July in light of our upcoming semiquincentennial in 2026. “America’s 250th birthday should be a moment for us to rally around civics – the educational foundation of American self-government,” he writes. Zeiger continues by noting that a quality civics education is crucial to the perpetuation of the American experiment in liberty, equality, and self-government. He maintains that “the American founders knew that education was essential, not just to personal success, but to the very survival of the republic. If ever we needed to recover the civic mission of education at every level — from kindergarten to college and beyond — it is now.” Zeiger concludes by pointing out that civic renewal is already taking shape, including at institutions like the Jack Miller Center, the Bill of Rights Institute, the National Constitution Center, iCivics, and the American Legion. Though America is at a pivotal time in our nation's history, he maintains that optimism is certainly warranted.

At RealClearEducation, Jack Miller Center fellow Justin Dyer contends that America’s public colleges and universities should once again become centers of civic revitalization that they were established to be. And, fortunately, that is already beginning to happen. For instance, at the University of Texas, Dyer was recently named inaugural dean of the School of Civic Leadership, which seeks to mold civic leaders who can overcome the many challenges of the 21st century. He notes that throughout the United States, civic educators are “creating new schools, institutes, and initiatives that prepare students for civic responsibility through the study of America’s founding principles, economic foundations, and history.” Dyer closes by calling Americans  to bridge “our ideological differences,” rebuild “trust,” and reverse “the polarization that threatens our nation.” As he contends, revitalizing the American way of life beings by renewing civic education in our places of higher education.
