Leading off our curation for this week is the 1776 report, which was authored by members of President Trump’s now disbanded 1776 Commission. Chairman Larry Arnn, Vice Chair Carol M. Swain, and Executive Director Matthew Spalding outline the report’s purpose: “The 1776 report calls for a return to the unifying ideals stated in the Declaration of Independence. It quotes the greatest Americans, black and white, men and women, in devotion to these ideals.” At the American Civics portal, Mike Sabo reviews the 1776 report, finding that it sketches out a compelling view of the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the architecture of the U.S. Constitution. The report focuses on historical and present-day threats to our institutions, such as progressivism, communism, and identity politics, and proposes ways to reinvigorate American republicanism. Mike Gonzalez, a member of the 1776 Commission, defends the report against its detractors and argues that it’s a good resource “for historians to look at primary sources, analyze what they meant in the context of the time, debate that meaning in good faith, without an agenda, and be ready to correct the record when proven wrong.” Colleen Sheehan writes that free communication between citizens is the key to recovering national unity. She argues, “We are in the midst of a crisis of civic trust, and our first order of business must be to squelch the urge to ‘cancel’ our fellow Americans who have different views. Instead, we must engage with them in the public discourse necessary to save our nation.” Rounding out this week’s slate of pieces is Mike Sabo’s latest civics institutions op-ed, which looks at two programs at the University of Notre Dame that teach the meaning of America to undergraduates. Both directed by Associate Professor Vincent Phillip Muñoz, The Potenziani Program in Constitutional Studies and The Tocqueville Program for the Inquiry Into Religion and Public Life gives students the opportunity to engage with the American political tradition and have conversations with political leaders who are working to carry on the legacy of republican statesmanship.
