We begin this week’s curation at RealClear’s American Civics portal by highlighting the recently released Hillsdale 1776 Curriculum for K-12 students, which covers civics, government, and U.S. history. The result of the combined efforts of Hillsdale professors and the nation’s best teachers, students will study American history and civics from the Founding to the Civil War a total of four times, ensuring that they have a strong understanding of our country and its people. The curriculum features key texts, questions for classroom discussion, primary sources, sample assignments, links to online courses from Hillsdale College, and much more. Additional units that cover post-Civil War history, including the Gilded Age, the Progressive Movement, the New Deal, and World War II, will be released in the coming months.

“The teaching of honest history and an accurate account of civics is the key to forming good citizens,” says Matthew Spalding, Dean of the Van Andel School of Government. “The Hillsdale 1776 Curriculum has been carefully designed to do just that, providing parents, teachers, and schools not with what they should oppose, but with a solid curriculum they can wholeheartedly endorse for all of America’s children.”

At RealClearEducation, James Stoner and Paul Carrese debate Mark Bauerlein regarding the quality of the Roadmap to Educating for American Democracy, a framework that aims to inculcate a better understanding of civics and U.S. history among K-12 students. Stoner and Carrese support the Roadmap, calling its “patriotic approach” an effective strategy that can help reverse our civic disintegration. By contract, Bauerlein describes the Roadmap as a “lukewarm” document that will only hasten the rise of political activism in classrooms on behalf of leftist causes.

Finally, in the latest article in our ongoing civic institutions series, Mike Sabo highlights how Thales Academy, a network of pre-K-12 classical schools, and Thales College, which opens in the fall of 2022, is transmitting the intellectual inheritance of Western civilization and the Judeo-Christian tradition to students. Founded by entrepreneur Robert L. Luddy, Thales aims to produce free-minded citizens of good character who can flourish in the modern world.
