This week’s curation at RealClear’s American Civics portal leads off with Daniel J. Mahoney’s review of Victor Davis Hanson’s latest book, “The Dying Citizen.” According to Mahoney, Hanson’s “immensely erudite and inspiriting book offers a most welcome corrective to those influential forces and doctrines in our midst that conspire to delegitimize the citizen and citizenship as such.” He writes that in order to preserve republican government, “we must rekindle the mix of thoughtfulness, civic fortitude, and tough-minded moderation that is the mark of the free man and woman.” Mahoney also joined Hanson on The Traditionalist podcast to discuss his important contributions to the pivotal question of what defines American citizenship.

The Washington Examiner has launched a new campaign, “Restoring America.” Editor in Chief Hugo Gurdon argues that our nation is in the midst of great turmoil and that a restoration of the American “unum” – the principles, traditions, and virtues Americans should share in common – must take place. “Restoring America,” Gordon says, will bring “attention in news reporting, commentary, and video to” the raging “debate over the direction of the country” and supply solutions to the “necessary task of returning America to robust good health.”

“Restoring America,” he continues, will teach the important habits of character and principles that define republican citizenship, which include patriotism and national unity, individual responsibility, free speech and the freedom to worship, standing up for America’s interests on the world stage, and putting power back into the people’s hands rather than bureaucrats.

“Restoring America” already features notable articles from friends of the American Civics portal, including civil rights veteran Bob Woodson and Hillsdale College’s Matthew Spalding.

Continuing our ongoing civic institutions series, American Civics portal Mike Sabo editor brings attention to how the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) highlights the past and present threats Communism poses to free government around the world. President and CEO Ambassador Andrew Bremberg says that VOC spotlights Communism’s devastating toll on humankind through “telling powerful stories and highlighting examples of Communism’s victims.” These stories, he argues, “capture our imaginations, creating deeper connections” that will help students “learn core truths” that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
