This week’s curation at RealClear’s American Civics portal highlights a number of articles reflecting on Veterans Day, which was celebrated this past Thursday, Nov. 11. At 1945, James Di Pane points out that although “brave citizens have enlisted in the armed services to preserve our God-given rights and freedoms since the Revolutionary War,” Veterans Day wasn’t officially established until 1954. The date of November 11th was chosen “because it marks the anniversary of Armistice Day, when the fighting stopped on the Western front at the end of the First World War.” Di Pane argues that Veterans Day “is a holiday of gratitude and reflection” and “focuses on all who have served, not just the fallen.” It offers citizens “the chance to show public appreciation for our living veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces.” By educating students on the importance of Veterans Day, Di Pane writes that “we can ensure future generations will also answer the call if needed and will better understand that honorable service to the country is necessary to safeguard America from a host of threats.” At the Wall Street Journal, H.R. McMaster, who served as the White House national security adviser during the Trump administration, reflects on Veterans Day in light of the U.S.’s recent exit from Afghanistan. McMaster urges all Americans to “thank the men and women who served in Afghanistan and the families who gave their last full measure of devotion,” assuring “them that America’s war in Afghanistan was a just response to the most devastating terrorist attack in history.” Finally, Lee Habeeb at Newsweek writes that we can trace our nation’s very existence to the honor and bravery of one man: George Washington. As teacher Vince Benedetto told a gathering of high school students a few years ago, "It's frequently been remarked that the words of Thomas Jefferson would mean little without the sword of George Washington.” Original Posts Lauren Weiner, RealClearPublicAffairs Essential Reading Myron Magnet, Claremont Review of Books The 1787 Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin famously said, gave America “a republic—if you can keep it.” We couldn’t...
