This week’s curation at RealClear’s American Civics portal leads off with coverage of the 80th anniversary of the shocking bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, which Franklin D. Roosevelt called “a date which will live in infamy.” At RealClearDefense, Nicholas Joy notes that “fewer than 100 veterans of the attack on Pearl Harbor are still alive today” and calls us “to remember – and act on – the lessons of that day.” “We cannot take our country’s physical safety for granted,” he contends, “and we cannot ignore a rising, expansionist power on the opposite side of the Pacific. The clock is ticking.”

In the latest article in our ongoing civic institutions series, Mike Sabo highlights Ashbrook's The American Idea podcast. Hosted by Ashbrook Executive Director Jeff Sikkenga, the podcast features top scholars such as Lucas Morel and Joseph Fornieri discussing key American documents and speeches such as the Declaration of Independence and Lincoln's Second Inaugural. The podcast has even hosted Vice President Mike Pence for a special edpisode, which Sikkenga called a “great honor and a delightful surprise.” Sikkenga says that the podcast “elevates lively and thoughtful conversations with renowned academics and public figures based on questions rooted in the fundamental documents and debates of America” – what he calls “the Ashbrook way of teaching and learning.”

With the passing of Bob Dole, a veteran and long-time senator who appeared on two presidential tickets, Robert Charles argues that “Bob Dole is America – the best America produces, a life centered on courage, resilience, determination, and love of country.” David Plazas, the current director of opinion and engagement for USA Today in Tennessee, recalls meeting Dole after winning a high school civics essay competition in 1994. He points to the last essay Dole penned, in which he poignantly wrote: “Our history is rich with political debate and deep divisions, but collectively we share a common purpose for a better America. We cannot let political differences stand in the way of that common good.”
