Leading off this week’s curation is our newest theme portal, which provides the best American civics resources for students in elementary school, middle school, and high school. This portal will help students understand American triumphs and tragedies and the virtues and knowledge needed to be better citizens of the country they call home. Learning from the best teachers of America is another important aspect of civic education. In that spirit, Hillsdale College has commissioned historian Wilfred McClay to lead an online course based on his textbook, Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story. The course speaks to the “great triumphs and achievements of our nation’s past” as well as its “shortcomings and failures” and “offers a broad and unbiased study” of history that can guide the “cultivation of intelligent patriotism.” Continuing our theme of the importance of inculcating civic education is Michael Warren’s op-ed on keeping the judiciary an independent, non-political branch of government. A judge for the Oakland County Circuit Court and founder of Patriot Week, Warren writes, “Only by affirming judicial independence can we hope to maintain the rule of law, ensure justice, and find the truth.” Former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker recalls Ronald Reagan’s admonition that education should instill “an informed patriotism.” Learning U.S. history is pivotal “to avoid prior mistakes and to embrace past successes.” Rounding out our curation is a short interview between Ashbrook Executive Director Jeffrey Sikkenga and Rollye James of WGN radio on how a deep knowledge and appreciation of American history is needed now more than ever.
