Energy Realism over the past week focused on the need for the incoming Biden administration to be moderate in its approach to energy and climate policy.

For example, Paul Alexander warns Democrats to not follow the progressive wing of the party because it could actually undermine the Biden-Harris agenda. Too many middle-of-the-road voters perceive Democrats as catering to the far left, as represented by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. This helps explain why Democrats performed poorly down ballot in the 2020 election, retaining the House of Representatives but by the smallest margin since World War II and failing to flip anywhere near the number of Senate seats pundits predicted. Charlie Melancon also argues for seeking the middle ground. To build on picking up the White House, Democrats should listen to voters who want a balanced, bipartisan approach on energy and climate. If not, future blue victories are at risk.

As Realism continues to illustrate, one of the main goals of the Biden administration will be to install a massive fleet of electric cars to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thomas Madison Jr., however, brings a reality check: the electric car revolution and the pivot to renewable energy is highly materials intensive. The “energy transition” requires embracing and enforcing environmentally responsible mining law now, but key projects continue to face major opposition. In any event, electric cars still account for less than 1% of the entire U.S. fleet. Realism wants to highlight an article detailing their numerous shortcomings and why sales might not take off like some proclaim.
