Energy Realism this past week put our energy blame right at the doorstep of those who deserve it and offered up a few forgotten solutions by the “only electric cars, only renewables” unrealists.

David Holt describes the provably dishonest: Joe Biden’s “Putin price hike” blame when it comes to surging energy prices for Americans. The truth, of course, is that energy prices were sky-high long before Putin’s illegal war, starting sometime around January 20, 2021. Does the White House really think Americans will forget that? For example, the obsession over far more expensive electric cars is about as curious as it gets. The immense mining needed for their materials makes electric cars anything but “green.” Levi Russell argues that the EV dream is really just a dangerous push against our freedom of movement. Automotive liberties are not only hobby related; they are essential to preventing yet another step along the road to serfdom at the hands of woke corporations and federal bureaucrats.

And greens seem utterly unwilling to domestically mine what is required for their favored energy sources. Do not be fooled by the name: Congressman Pete Stauber rails against the so-called “Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act,” which will make it even harder to access minerals here at home, while furthering our reliance on Russia, China, and the Congo. The bill contains several provisions that contribute to longtime goals of the Left: dissuade investment in mining and choke projects to death with an unpredictable permitting process. Dan Ervin, however, notes that we actually do have a secret weapon. As natural gas prices continue to rise, and huge amounts of steel and electricity are needed for green energy development itself, our massive resources of home-grown coal deserve a second look. Lest we forget that coal was the foundation of the U.S. electric power system from Edison’s Peal Street Station in 1882 all the way to 2016.

Indeed, our Essential Reading this week then brings us a mandatory reminder from Indur M. Goklani of the truly independent Cato Institute: fossil fuels have saved humanity from nature and nature from humanity. This is the ultimate reality check for those that hate coal, hate oil, and hate gas – you, know, the very same resources that supply over 80% of our energy. Ignorance abound.
