Energy Realism this past week looked at the huge role that Pennsylvania must continue to play in U.S. energy policy and how we can help others get access to the real fuels that run the world.

Krisztina Pusok gets us started: even when it comes to pushing its own energy and climate agenda, the Biden administration simply cannot get out of its own way. For example, repairing American infrastructure has been the primary big-ticket item on which President Biden has staked his presidency, but his own environmental regulations threaten to undermine the goals of his landmark $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. And as we have discussed many times, more natural gas must be the centerpiece strategy of any national energy policy put forth. Centered in Pennsylvania, Bruce L. Castor, Jr. argues that both political parties must support the American shale revolution to get allies off Russian energy, especially in Europe. Unfortunately, Mike Butler knows that we are getting the exact opposite out of Washington, DC. Their scattershot approach to reducing energy prices somehow ignores the obvious solution to support domestic energy production.

Looking globally, Duggan Flanakin reads the writing on the wall. We must respond to Russian encroachment in all corners of the globe. The Arctic is increasingly a major focus of military, political, and industrial competition. The Russian bear has roared at neighboring Finland and Sweden, claimed Alaska as its own, and launched major Arctic oil and gas exploration and production and coal mining projects. The silver lining of the war? Even many greens now realize just how essential these fossil fuels will remain for decades to come. Derrick Hollie & Vijay Jayaraj thus demand an “all of the above” approach to benefit the world’s poor. Fossil fuels are undeniably more reliable and more affordable, which explains why they supply over 80% of the energy used in the world’s richest countries. This segues nicely  to our Essential Reading this week from legendary energy thinker Vaclav Smil: hydrocarbons have been at the heart of human development and progress for well over a century.
