MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Ok - so last week we had that little snow event that we all woke up to Thursday morning. It had been awhile since we have experienced any snow - so the cold weather was worth it.  In the past week: no snow just COLD WEATHER.  Does it seem like just yesterday yours truly here at Reader Rewards was lamenting the hot weather? This cold weather can stop anytime! And to think the local forecast is steadily calling for continued colder weather and another chance of the white stuff a week from now.  Yikes.

Meanwhile, Virginia is picking up the pace on COVID-19 vaccinations. Word came out this week that very soon CVS will be in the game dispensing vaccines. Read here for more. We all know the drill to hold the line until it's our respective turn for the vaccine.  We shall refrain this week from chanting the mantra!

The only mantra I'm sure anyone is thinking about this week is something along the lines of "Super Bowl Sunday!". Yes, the day is almost upon us. A full two weeks of hearing yet MORE about Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. Let them play already, right? From us here at Reader Rewards to all of you: enjoy Super Bowl Sunday!

Yes, we're now at your favorite part of the newsletter, I'm sure: this week's gift card contests!

COMING SUNDAY:

Live music shows are few and far between these days, but music lovers are honing their skills at home, and local music stores are reaping the benefits.

Alpha Music in Virginia Beach is one of several shops in Hampton Roads that has seen an uptick in customers as the pandemic wanes on.

People isolating at home and looking for something to do are learning how to play a new instrument. Some hobbyists are upgrading their gear because they have more time on their hands to practice. And when bars and restaurants shut down last spring, drying up live gigs, working musicians took advantage of the time to buy recording gear and are setting up home studios.

  •  If this were any normal tax-filing year, a forgiven business loan would be taxed as income, and the business expenses paid for with the loan, written off. It’s a neutral result. No tax harm, no tax benefit. But this is no normal year -- and a decision by Congress to allow PPP loan recipients to not only get the forgiven loan tax free, but also be able to deduct expenses paid with it, is running counter to Virginia's tax policy. Unless the General Assembly decides otherwise.

The Chrysler Museum of Art opens a signature exhibition "Americans in Spain: Painting and Travel, 1820-1920" on Friday, Feb. 12. It highlights the impact of Spanish art and culture on American painters in the 19th and 20th centuries and brings together more than 100 artworks, including paintings from the 17th-20th centuries, photographs, prints and travel guides. It showcases pieces by American artists Mary Cassatt, Robert Henri and John Singer Sargent and Spain’s old masters including Diego Velázquez and Claudio Coello. The exhibition is co-organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art and Milwaukee Art Museum. The show will be on view through May 16 before traveling to Milwaukee.
