COMING SUNDAY:

Kari Fotis, a retired York County special education teacher, joined with a psychologist to open a new dyslexia treatment center in Newport News this summer. She and parents she work with say that the pandemic and virtual learning have presented major challenges for students with one of the most common learning disabilities.

Because of The Virginian-Pilot's reporting, Del. Lashrecse Aird has introduced a bill that would ban police from using facial recognition technology unless they get local leaders' approval.

 Hampton hosts its annual Martin Luther King Day commemoration Monday, which will be be streamed live due to COVID-19 restrictions, with nods to local trailblazers from history, modern day and community leaders. Each year, the city names several heroes whose names are added to the steel panels outside the Hampton Roads. Convention Center. Mayor Donnie Tuck announced this years honorees Wednesday.  Read more in this Sunday's Main News section.
  • Lana Puckett and Kim Person wrote "Cornstalk Pony" almost 30 years ago in their Yorktown studio. The song found its way to Nashville not long after and was covered by folk singer/songwriter Steve Gillette. With stages closed due to COVID and a little extra time on their hands, Puckett and Person decided to rerecord the track and once again, it found fans in the country music capital again. A video producer loved the song so much, she reached out to the women and asked to produce a music video for it.

    Ella Fitzgerald, who died in 1996 at age 79, remains the ultimate female jazz singer. It’s easy to treasure Billie Holiday’s interpretive depth, Sarah Vaughan’s extraordinary vocal range, Carmen McRae’s soulful manner and Dinah Washington’s larger-than-life instrument while realizing why Fitzgerald alone earned the sobriquet First Lady of Song.

  • Many people have discovered new hobbies and interests during the coronavirus lockdown. Former Western Branch head football coach Lew Johnston decided to write a book. Johnston, who also coached at Nansemond-Suffolk, gives a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most successful high school programs in Hampton Roads.   Read more in The Sunday Sports section.
