MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Alrighty then - we're BAAAAAAACK!  Yours truly here at Reader Rewards is back from a bit of a break - yes, I may have gone somewhere to soak up some sunshine and warmer weather.  Certainly warmer than what we've endured here in Hampton Roads over the course of January and February. Heck - I even brought some of it back with me! And to think we were celebrating 65F a couple weeks ago?!  How can we possibly go back now??

Meanwhile, it feels as though the positive vibes continue to flow from our last newsletter a couple weeks ago.  Consider: more progress on the coronavirus vaccination front AND cases continue to decline slightly. If you didn't get a chance to read The Pilot's own Katherine Hafner's article on updating your vaccine preregistration, check it out here.  While on this topic, be sure to check out our coverage concerning a massive COVID-19 vaccination site coming to Portsmouth this Monday, March 15th.

As vaccinations pick up and hopefully cases continue to trend downward, HOPEFULLY we will have some form of The Neptune Festival in Virginia Beac this year.  You will recall the event was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.  Besides - 2021 will bring about The Neptune Festival's first prince!  Check it out here, if you haven't already.

While we're on positive/uplifting news of the week, how can we not mention the dining/food coverage Matthew Korfhage brings us each week? In this case - the story on cheesy pepperoni bread becoming a Filipino tradition in Virginia Beach. Check it out here!

So, March is now upon us.  Among a number of topics, March brings about something at least some of us root for or participate in somehow: March Madness.  You may recall last year both the men's and women's tournaments were canceled as COVID fell upon us in one full swoop.  Tournaments for the men and women are back on for 2021, with all of the men's games to be played in Indiana and most of the women's games to be played in San Antonio, Texas. We shall see if either Norfolk State or Old Dominion are participants. Regardless, it's about time we had this back as a form of entertainment again!

Ok - now those contests!  Given March Madness as a theme - note the contest involving Buffalo Wild Wings!  Enjoy!

COMING SUNDAY:

Staffing at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail has continued to decline -- with more than 100 jail officer positions now vacant -- and its unclear when the member cities will be able to send back the inmates they removed from the jail late last year to alleviate the issue. The jail has had four deaths so far this year, and board members are now arguing about funding for the facility.

With the weather warming up and tourist season just around the corner, Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks are gearing up for vacationers. Both areas took a hit from the pandemic last year, but as more people get vaccinated and families can finally shake off that cabin fever, business owners are looking forward to a rebound.
