MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Happy New Year!! Yours truly here at Reader Rewards welcomes all of you to 2021!  2021 MUST be better than 2020, right?!  Absolutely - although we'll just throw out January 6, 2021 thus far - what do you think? Hopefully everyone had a quiet, safe and healthy New Year's holiday and you are off to a strong start one week in!

Just when we all think all talk of an arena here in Hampton Roads has fallen off the radar - the story concerning Military Circle pops up earlier this week. If you hadn't heard, check it out here.  Pharrell Williams' name is in the mix, so maybe there is something to it this time?  We'll have to hang in and wait to see what happens.

Meanwhile, a leftover refrain from 2020: keep six feet of physical distance, wear a mask and wash hands frequently!  COVID-19 cases continue to creep up here in Hampton Roads and in Virginia overall.  So far we're not nearly as bad off as other states - so let's keep up the good fight!

As usual - until we can get back to offering community/special events tickets for our contests, we still have our gift card contests this week!

This week: Starbucks, Olive Garden & Kroger! Plenty of coffee trips there, a full Italian meal and groceries!

COMING SUNDAY:

One store owner's opening day was on March 8 - just before the world went crazy. Another, who had a comfortable job as a hotel chef found himself in the middle of two industries suffering the most -- tourism and restaurants. The pandemic offered the worst of timing but, for some, the best opportunity to start fresh. These are the stories of several small businesses that started up either right before or during the pandemic, one from each Hampton Roads city.

While the Coast Guard as stopped searching (when it’s this cold bodies sink), Erik Mezick’s brother and volunteers keep going out on boats, hoping to find his remains. Who was he? What might have happened to him? Was his accident anything like Joseph Chen’s, who’s widow is suing the CBBT for $6 million?

  • Detroit was the birthplace of the American car. It is the city that gave us Motown, and techno, and the first recorded licks of John Lee Hooker. And it is also the homeland of one of the country’s most distinctive and long-overlooked pizzas — a square-cut, cheese-bordered, hearteningly thick and often-sauce-slathered slab that can invoke enough comfort to smother a heart attack.

And now, finally, as long as you’re fast enough to snag one each day, you can get those four-corner pies from a food truck in Hampton Roads.

  • As is customary for the new year, many people will vow to change their ways and pledge to improve their health. Chief among their concerns will be wine and other alcoholic beverages. Dry Januarys have become fashionable, as has what has come to be called the new sobriety.

I don’t know whether the emotional cost of enduring a pandemic for almost a year will diminish the appeal of a drinking hiatus. It could be that a dry January this year will go the way of dressing for work and regular haircuts.

  • The leader of Virginia Beach public schools is calling for some of the division’s students to start returning for in-person classes on Jan. 19 despite Hampton Roads’ number of new coronavirus cases and positive rate continuing to climb. Read more in The Sunday Break section.
