MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Without question this week's top event is yet another peaceful transition of power as a display of our democracy in action.  We here at Reader Rewards wish President Biden and The Biden administration nothing but good luck - as there is much work to do.  Namely around the coronavirus.  Speaking of which, we learned this week that while we've fared relatively well compared to the rest of the country of late - cases are spiking in Virginia and specifically here in Hampton Roads.  Since our refrain seemed to work well earlier this year - we'll remind all of us again: wear a mask, keep six feet of physical distance and wash your hands often! Although vaccinations have started out a bit slow here locally - surely the pace will pick up and life can/will eventually get back to normal.  We just have to hang in there a bit longer.  We have done this before - we can do it again!

Even with all the news and coverage surrounding the presidential inauguration, I'm sure the REAL story here locally is the coming of Restaurant Week in all cities throughout Hampton Roads.  If you missed Matthew Korfhage's coverage on where to find all the deals - check it out here! Of course we will all need to balance this against the COVID challenge, but fortunately most establishments have delivery or curbside pick up.  Enjoy!

As usual - I'm sure it's all about the gift card contests though!

COMING SUNDAY:

Today, decades after Brown v. Board of Education and the Fair Housing Act were supposed to break down barriers dividing the races, neighborhoods in Norfolk are even more segregated than they were during the Jim Crow era, and the schools aren’t far behind. Here's how we got to this point.

  •  Workers tore down a huge nest that’s been on a Shore Drive tower for years, much to the dismay of a wildlife photographer who’s taken recent shots of eagles up there. How did this happen and why was it given the green light?

We can all be forgiven if we want this year to be easy.
And there is nothing in this world easier than a cocktail in a can, a smashable quaff for those who can’t even be bothered with an ice cube. After spending its early years in obscurity, the frothy canned tipple has finally found its moment.

  • Among the regular rotation of new faces for Hampton men’s basketball, one constant endures.

Sophomore point guard Russell ‘Deuce’ Dean leads the Big South Conference in minutes played, hardly leaving the floor despite the back-to-back scheduling that puts 70 to 80 minutes on his body on consecutive nights.

In that time, Dean averages 11.1 points per game and 6.6 assists per game while boasting the conference’s top assist-turnover ratio (2.3).
