MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  Hopefully everyone has recovered from a nice long July 4th weekend!  Here's to hoping everyone got a chance to enjoy fireworks somewhere, something on the grill with friends & family and maybe some time relaxing near a favorite body of water somewhere.

With no time to spare out of a summer holiday weekend, here comes the season's first tropical system.  Elsa.  Fortunately as a tropical storm later today(Thursday) - crummy weather nonetheless.  If you missed coverage on the approaching storm - catch up on it here. Feels just a tad early for us to be dealing with this, yes? I mean - is there ANY chance that the early arrival of Elsa had anything to do with a Virginia fisherman catching a three pount goldfish?? If you missed the story on this - check out Jami Frankenberry's report here. Yours truly here at Reader Rewards had many a goldfish as a kid.  Three pounds though??

On the sports front - for all NHL fans - how about The Tampa Bay Lightning?  Back-to-back Stanley Cup champs!  We're also nearing the end of the NBA season, with the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks tipping off The NBA Finals this week.  You may recall yours truly swearing allegiance to The Lakers.  That's a whole different story for another conversation and space elsewhere!

The Tokyo Olympics are almost here!  THAT is the real sports story, isn't it?  Although it doesn't sound as though there will be fans in attendance now due to COVID? In any event, there will be Hampton Roads representation at this year's games!  Check out the list of local athletes that have qualified - right here. Read up on Grant Holloway's story here as well.

Dr. Howard Lowrie Fisher wore this gold-plated pocket watch as he sailed in May 1915 with his sister-in-law on the luxury liner the RMS Lusitania.

World War I began the year before and Fisher and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Conner, were traveling from New York to France to help set up a field hospital. On May 7, the ship neared the coast of Ireland, which had become a danger zone with prowling German U-boats.

Lusitania’s captain had been warned to use defensive maneuvers such as zigzagging to evade German torpedoes but the captain refused. Around 2:15 p.m. May 7, the Lusitania was struck and sank within 18 minutes.
