Along the downtown Hampton waterfront, behind the NASA Langley Visitor Center, you may have noticed the seafood business bustling.

Trucks drive in and out to pick up fish orders from Amory Seafood Co. A fish-shaped sign hangs off the wholesaler’s building, as boats pull up out front.

But in an unassuming brick building next door, Virginia Tech researchers are working on a new means of getting seafood to your table: from a lab.

The group is hoping to figure out the best, most sustainable way to program cells to mimic the look, feel and flavor of the meat we eat.

As the red wave swept across the Commonwealth on Election Day, Democrats realized their stronghold on the state’s most populous city wasn’t strong enough.

Glenn Youngkin, the Republican candidate for governor, captured more than 50% of the vote statewide and 53% of the vote in Virginia Beach. A slew of candidates for state seats also beat their blue opponents.

What happened? Did the stars align for the Republican ticket this year, or did voter disappointment on social issues including crime and education swing the pendulum to the right?

It started out as a class assignment for Loren Rajhel. Then it became much more.

The 15-year-old sophomore at Grassfield High School was named the grand prize winner — the youngest ever — in the 14th annual Bra-ha-ha awards show and auction held last weekend in Chesapeake.

The event, run by the Chesapeake Regional Health Foundation, raises money for uninsured or underinsured people to get free mammograms and breast health services, and to fund advanced technology at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare.

The contest pulled in nearly 100 entries in several categories, including Most Creative, Best Craftsmanship, Best Seasonal or Holiday, and Most Inspirational. Three bras received honorable mentions.

Archaeologist and historian Richard Freund has led more than 45 expeditions around the world, including a search for the lost city of Atlantis and sites linked to the beginnings of Judaism and Christianity.

One of his most surprising discoveries, however, came about six years ago while he investigated a buried synagogue in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Someone there proposed that Freund examine what remained of a World War II forced-labor camp in the city that was led by Nazi commander Karl Plagge. There Plagge saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish prisoners.

“It’s really hard to use the words ‘good’ and ‘Nazi’ in the same sentence,” said Freund, now the Bertram and Gladys Aaron Professor of Jewish Studies at Christopher Newport University.

Freund found the complex, hidden tunnels, broken toys and the compelling story of an altruistic Nazi that became the 2018 documentary, “The Good Nazi.” It will be shown Nov. 10 at the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater in Virginia Beach. Freund will lead a discussion after the film.

The Langley Speedway connection in NASCAR’s Cup Series Championship race, set for Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, has never been stronger.

Of the Championship 4 drivers, one cut his teeth racing at Langley Speedway, where two others made appearances on their way up the ranks. The crew chief of the hottest driver has a long Langley legacy.

Seven days a week for the past 19 years, Tish Llaneza and her team nourished and cultivated Countryside Gardens in Hampton.

The locally owned and operated garden center at 220 E. Mercury Blvd. will pull up its roots on Dec. 31. Its closing sale is underway.

“It has been very successful; it’s just with that comes 20 years of age also,” Llaneza said. “It’s time for us to retire and all the ladies here are in agreement.”
