MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  Where maybe the only thing bigger than this week's heatwave has been Shark Week?!  Is yours truly the only one that has noticed the Shark Week shows becoming more and more out-of-the-ordinary?  It remains popular every year, so I guess the variety of shark shows must be a hit!

While we have had some experience with sharks here along the coast in Virginia and North Carolina, how about the long tradition of the Chincoteague Pony Swim??  The pandemic put this tradition on hold for the last couple years, but it returned for its 97th year.  You can check out the coverage right here by The Pilot's Noble Brigham! Quite a sight for sure.

Staying with the topic of local rare/odd stories, how many of us have gone through random book donation boxes searching for that next book to read?  Better yet, how many of us have come across a book published in 1829 by Thomas Jefferson? Bob Gilson of Virginia Beach can claim this now.  If you missed it, check out the story by The Pilot's Stacy Parker right here. Imagine that someone was simply trying to clear out an old bookshelf somewhere at home and dropped this off in the library bin!

Lastly, you know we always keep you in the know on the local food and restaurant scene here at Reader Rewards.  Have you heard about the competing sub shops in Norfolk and Portsmouth run by two brothers-in-law??  Talk about a rivalry!  Get the rundown on the sub shops right here by The Pilot's correspondent Marissa Knies Lanier.

Keeping in short and sweet this week so you can move on to the contests!

COMING SUNDAY:

Betty Ann Levin got a disturbing phone call on Sunday morning.

Her neighbor told her anti-Semitic flyers had been distributed throughout their community in Virginia Beach. Levin quickly went to investigate and found one in her driveway.

The flyers — which took aim at Jewish executives who work for Disney and included a website address that links to anti-Semitic videos — were left in driveways throughout several neighborhoods in Richmond and Virginia Beach last weekend.

Although some were shocked, it’s far from the only such incident in the state.

The Anti-Defamation League reports that Virginia had the second-highest number of incidents involving white supremacist propaganda in the nation last year. And it has steadily increased in the last few years. Advocates for equality and inclusion say it’s an issue that needs attention because the hateful messages can lead to deadly consequences. But they caution it should be addressed in a measured way that doesn’t unintentionally amplify the propaganda.

Ke’Nyzjah Ferebee stood by the kitchen island in her pink apron, adding cupcake liners to a muffin pan. She used an ice cream scoop to fill each with vanilla cake batter to ensure they would look identical. A finished batch sat on the counter with white buttercream swirled on top. The cupcakes were for a 2-year-old’s Moana-themed birthday party. The next day, she had orders for a two-tiered cake and two birthday cakes. She also planned to bake a fourth cake using the Lambeth method — an old English decorating technique with royal icing.

The baker, 16, wore a cream-colored skirt and matching blouse that peeked from the sides of the apron. She’d already given her mother instructions on what to wear to coordinate with hers — a requirement for events and meetings.

Ke’Nyzjah’s heels clicked on the floor as she cleaned up her mess; she prefers a clean workstation. Her mother washed the pink mixing bowl.

While most teenagers are spending the summer hanging out with friends and working, Ke’Nyzjah is filling orders, updating her website and getting new branding photos.

She owns and operates KayKe (pronounced “cake”) Bakery, a home-based business in Chesapeake specializing in custom cakes and cupcakes. She offers 14 flavors (including blueberry lemon, carrot and German chocolate) with a choice of five buttercream frostings and three fruit fillings. She requires at least two to four weeks’ notice on orders, and she gets six to seven a week.

Kate Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill” still stuck in your head? Still reeling from the twists of Season Four’s “Stranger Things,” a sci-fi Netflix megahit based in the 1980s?

We’re here to help.

The series follows a group of teens from fictional Hawkins, Indiana, who are fighting off the supernatural with the help of one powerful girl. The show has won seven Emmys and received 13 nominations for its latest season, including an impressive nod for Outstanding Drama Series. Its fan base runs from young folks to older viewers, particularly Gen Xers, who love the touches from their childhoods including ’80s rock, VHS tapes and Walkman cassette players.

Here’s a list of 11 Hampton Roads spots that can keep your love for ’80s nostalgia going.

When Karan Mulkey opened Rooms, Blooms & More in 2002, friends pulled things out of their attics to help her fill the small store.

Within 2 ½ years, Mulkey’s consignment business outgrew that location and relocated to a 1,700-square -foot space in Newport News’ Hilton Village.

From antique and modern home furnishings to flower design and interior decorating consultations, Mulkey has all facets of her business’s name covered.

After 20 years in business, the store has developed a dedicated following thanks to maintaining a steady flow of items with store manager Allison Hund, Mulkey’s daughter, and five part-time employees knowing the value of each piece.
