MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where we're inching ever-closer to Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer and.....YES parents and kids: the start of school!  With this in mind - beach days are nearing an end.  Along with coverage of stories like the one that The Pilot's Stacy Parker brought us recently with the manatee that surfaced at Rudee Inlet.  If you missed it, check it out here!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Reader Rewards newsletter commentary to notify everyone that yesterday(August 26, 2021) was National Dog Day!  Yes, we here at Reader Rewards missed publishing the newsletter by one day.  A reminder though to gather those dog/cat/pet photos and submit to keep building our Pet Gallery!  Submit to mark.quan@pilotonline.com!

How many of us picked up playing board games again in the last year-and-a-half due to COVID-19??  Thought so.  If you missed Inside Business' Sandra Pennecke's coverage on the Virginia Beach board game cafe and bar - be sure to read up on it right here.  600 some board games?  Who knew that many existed??

Speaking of games and nearing the close of summer...that MUST mean high school football is right around the corner.  Be sure to check out the 757Teamz Top 15 Football poll.  You can scope it out right here.  Yes, there's a VERY familiar school sitting right at the top: Oscar Smith High School.  Oscar Smith has been sitting at or around the top for so long, former standouts are now coaches at high schools throughout Virginia.  The Pilot's Larry Rubama brought us coverage of two of them that faced off recently.  Check out Larry's coverage of the sibling ravalry - right here!

Lastly, a note to readers:  the Reader Rewards newsletter will be on hiatus next week.  All of us here at Reader Rewards will be soaking up some sun somewhere - as we wind down summer.  We'll see you again after Labor Day!

COMING SUNDAY:

A federal grant program for arts venues struggling during the coronavirus pandemic has doled out millions of dollars to Hampton Roads venue operators.

Hampton Roads movie theaters, concert halls, museums and other live venues have been awarded more than $38.8 million since the beginning of the federal program. Operators say the grants are a lifeline for their businesses and nonprofits, both rescuing their venues and helping to retain employees and, in at least one case, saving local taxpayers money.

Virginia Department of Health data shows that the rate of Black people dying from opioid overdoses jumped from 11.8 to 27.9 per 100k between 2019 and 2020 -- a higher jump than in any other racial or ethnic group. This is a look into how the Black community in Hampton Roads has been affected by opioid overdoses and related fatalities, and why they're seeing such a staggering jump in their numbers.

As he waits in a jail in Suffolk for his sentencing, ex-Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe is likely looking at the possibility of 20 or more years in prison. That's according to some local attorneys who regularly practice in Norfolk's federal court. McCabe's older brother, Tom, said he's not surprised by the convictions and his refusal to take a plea deal. "He always wanted to be a big fish in a little pond," Tom McCabe said.

One out of every 10 nasal swab tests are coming back positive for the coronavirus, as the state rides the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Over 2,800 new cases are being diagnosed throughout Virginia each day, up more than 20% from the prior week, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

But Virginians are putting on their masks again, and some who hesitated to get vaccinated initially are now rolling up their sleeves.

Hampton’s visitors’ bureau and its history museum have been awarded a combined $20,000 in state tourism grants to promote the coming aquatics center and the Civil War Trail, city officials said this week.

Every Sunday through September, weather permitting, Boat Church services are held on the Narrows Beach at First Landing State Park. Worshippers gather along the shoreline or in boats to participate in a service lead by local pastors. The idea was initiated by former Gov. Bob McDonnell.

The first thing I did when I found out I had gotten a summer internship at The Virginian-Pilot was to Google “Hampton Roads Ultimate Frisbee.”

I didn’t find much. A summer league in Newport News that played once a week. A women’s team in Richmond that seemed pretty good. A Facebook group with people — mostly men — posting about beach pickup.

I play Ultimate Frisbee in college at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

It’s more competitive than people think and, no, it is not the same as disc golf: The game calls for two teams, seven people each. A team scores a point by catching the Frisbee in the end zone. When you are holding the disc, you can’t run with it; you have to pass it to another teammate within 10 seconds. It’s like a combination of soccer, football and basketball, except with a plastic disc.
