MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  Well, all of us have come to expect late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms and rain here in Hampton Roads during the summer.  Enough is enough though this week - am I right??

This is the time of year to enjoy OUTDOOR events!  Without rain, please!!  A prime example is Virginia Beach's newest music festival: Beach It!  If you're looking for all the details, look no further.  The Pilot's Colin Warren-Hicks has all the event information for you right here. Some country music, food, drinks and some shopping - what's not to like??

While we're still on the topic of Virginia Beach...for all that fretted over the loss of Belvedere Coffee Shop back in 2019 - we have good news for you.  The Pilot's Stacy Parker has coverage for you right here - of its return. Inside the Moxy hotel no-less!

We're still in that time of year where high school graduations are the talk of the town for families around Hampton Roads.  With those graduates comes scholarship offers for college for the coming year.  We cannot imagine much could beat the story out of Norview High School.  The Pilot's Kelsey Kendall has the very unique story right here. How can someone top over $700,000 in scholarship offers??

Many in Norfolk have kept a close eye on the potential retail development of Wards Corner.  Rumors of a new significant retailer?  The Pilot's Eliza Noe has the story here on WHO that retailer might be. Another one??

Many may recall local high school football star Josh Sweat playing for Oscar Smith High School. He has moved on to a brighter stage playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and playing in the Super Bowl.  Well, now it is turn to give back to the local football community.  757Teamz' Larry Rubama has coverage of Josh's first local football combine right here. A free event! Great to see local athletes achieve success on the biggest of stages. Better to watch them give back to the community!

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

COMING SUNDAY:

Water is entwined in Norfolk’s DNA.

The mermaid city is fringed by 144 miles of shoreline along its lakes, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay, including the popular stretch of beach at Ocean View. Much of that land is situated in residential neighborhoods, and a large chunk of Norfolk’s economy and livelihood is centered on its waters.

But this staple of Norfolkian life could become its greatest threat as climate change creates problems for many coastal locales. So the city proposed ways to protect its residents and properties long-term.

Now, Norfolk is poised for big changes.

At an April 25 meeting, the City Council approved the Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, a large-scale series of flood mitigation projects in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over the next 10 years — at a cost of more than $2 billion.

The massive undertaking includes 8 miles of new or extended flood walls built around downtown Norfolk neighborhoods over the next decade, as well as surge barriers and pump stations in other areas. The plan would be conducted over five phases, and all of them include new structures — except one.

The final phase, covering the neighborhoods south of the Elizabeth River, will not include new structures and instead focus on improvements to specific properties.

This sparked worries among southside residents that discriminatory practices and decisions made almost 100 years ago were looming within the city’s plans for the next century of flood protection.

But they fought back. And won.

Hampton Roads voters selected nominees in six House of Delegates primary races Tuesday — in some cases setting the stage for contentious November races, and in others, with no general election challengers, choosing presumptive winners who will head to the Virginia General Assembly.

The closest House races were Democratic primaries in District 92, which includes parts of Norfolk and Chesapeake, and District 96 in Virginia Beach.
