MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  Where yours truly here at Reader Rewards is back from a break - from somewhere where it was MUCH warmer than here in Hampton Roads!  As least as of this week.  Pretty chilly a couple days this week...on the heels of 70F+ on Monday though!  And to think this Saturday will be between 70F - 80F?? On December 11th no less.  Hampton Roads weather for us, right?

It will certainly be easier to get to either colder or warmer locales given the recent announcement by Breeze Airways.  If you missed it - The Pilot's Trevor Metcalfe has the story right here.  Getting to Long Island in New York or Palm Beach down in Floriday - for as low as $39 one way? Think of the temp outside as you are reading this newsletter...then also think about the temp down in Palm Beach, Florida.  Need we say more??

To be clear, no - we were not off for a week to remove the abandoned boat off the shore of First Landing State Park!  In case you missed Katherine Hafner's report in print or online in The Pilot or Daily Press - check it out here. Imagine...abandoning a boat?!

In the ongoing spirit of keeping everyone abreast of the dining scene here in Hampton Roads - especially new eateries....chicken salad sandwiches anyone? Inside Business' Sandra Pennecke has the scoop on the region's first franchise to focus on chicken salad sandwiches.  Check out Sandra's story right here. Chicken Salad Chick; definitely a unique restaurant name!

How about the Virginia Beach dessert shop that repurposed 1,500 toys to support CHKD AND turned its storefront into a Christmas display?  Got to love positive/uplifting stories like this at this time of year!  The Pilot's Saleen Martin has the coverage right here for you.

Lastly the second week of December brings about many festivities locally - to include Oscar Smith playing for a State Championship in high school football.  Yes, once again The Tigers will vie for the title against James Madison of Vienna on Saturday afternoon on the campus of ODU.  The Pilot's Greg Giesen has the recap of Oscar Smith run-up to the championship game - right here.

COMING SUNDAY:

An update on how the pandemic has further impacted the local recycling chain, including Chesapeake now considering nixing its curbside program. On the bright side, James City County has a new glass recycling program that will deliver the material directly to the OI plant in Toano. Other Hampton Roads cities are interested in doing something similar.

At 9:15, the “terrorist” — a sailor in a old grey sweatshirt carrying one of the blue-plastic carbines the Navy and Marines use in training — pulled the fire alarm just inside the air operations building at Naval Station Norfolk.

Three minutes later, he’d picked off one of the firefighters that raced to the scene at the far eastern end of the base.

Then, as the Navy Police patrol cars, sirens screaming, arrived, he ran back into the building — it controls all aircraft arriving and taking off from the base’s airfield — followed quickly by sailors.

It was a drill, as the base loudspeakers with their echoing message “Exercise, Exercise, Exercise” reassured the small city that is Naval Station Norfolk, but was one of the largest in recent memory, months in the planning, and designed as much to practice coordination with local first responders and the FBI as the high drama of Navy police taking down an active shooter.

The sun sparkles through three cascading glass domes and into the lobby of the Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center.

Its light accentuates nine massive white silk flowers that rise and fall in the highest dome, part of the international “Night Light” exhibition and a bright debut for Christopher Newport University’s arts center.

The Torggler Center opened recently after about 1 1/2 years of construction and 10 years of planning. It is designed as part museum, part community arts center and part academic building for CNU’s department of fine art and art history.

The 83,000-square-foot building is adjacent to the Ferguson Center for the Arts, connected by a curved colonnade that was extended for the project. As the Ferguson Center has become a popular venue for Broadway shows, concerts and world-renowned ballets, the Torggler was designed to be a destination for fine arts from across Virginia and beyond.

Melissa Holt admits she grew up hating chicken salad.

“When I was in college, my friends would go to Chicken Salad Chick at least once a week, sometimes more,” Holt said. “And I would go somewhere else for lunch.”

Further admitting she felt left out of the mix, Holt decided to give it a try — and became hooked.

Sold on the brand and its “spread joy, enrich lives, serve others” motto, Holt brought the first Chicken Salad Chick franchise to Hampton Roads.

The 2,650-square-foot restaurant, featuring a warm, homestyle atmosphere with an outdoor patio, opened on Dec. 7 at 2850 Kilgore Ave. in Hampton’s Peninsula Town Center. Holt plans to open a second location in the Williamsburg area in the latter part of 2022.
