MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where all of us here at Reader Rewards are wondering what we'll do with a weekend WITHOUT snow!  After a couple weekends with the white stuff - we almost felt it part of the "new normal" for a weekend.  Of course - as we all sit here and speak, it is 69F outside.  Go figure.

Not getting too far away from the topic of snow - you kind of wonder whether the sudden discussion of lifting the ban on sledding at Mount Trashmore was prompted by our recent snow.  If you missed it, The Pilot's Stacy Parker has the story for you right here. There's still at least a few more weeks of a reasonable chance of the white stuff popping back up in the winter forecast.  We shall see!

Well The Washington Football Team has always considered Hampton Roads its market for NFL fans. For a couple years now we've all awaited the new name for the football team.  FINALLY!  The Washington Commanders.  The Pilot's Jami Frankenberry has the entire write up here, if you missed it. Perhaps the new team name will bring it better luck than recent years?

Speaking of the NFL - it's that time of year where the NFL dominates the sports headlines with the NFL playoffs. This year however, the playoffs have dominated many headlines in general.  What an incredible run through the NFL playoffs, huh?  Almost all of the games came down to the last minute, with many decided in overtime or as time ran out. So now we await The Super Bowl.  The Cincinnati Bengals versus The Los Angeles Rams.  Held out in LA, no less.  Should be a great game.

Wait - Tom Brady retired???

Rounding out the whole topic of football, we've been fortunate here in Hampton Roads to contribute quite a bit of football talent to the NFL. Much of it starts with National Signing Day for local high school recruits to take their game to the next level at the collegiate level.  National Signing Day for 2022 was this week.  If you need a recap on where all the local recruits signed - catch up here with The Pilot's Larry Rubama. There's a good chance we'll one day see some of those recruits playing in a Super Bowl!

COMING SUNDAY:

The corridor in Building J-50 at Naval Station Norfolk doesn’t look anything like the weeks-long round of at-sea drilling that most sailors do before deployment -- but then, the Blue Crew of USS Lewis B. Puller’s sailors are a bit different.

Their ship is nearly 7,000 miles away in the Persian Gulf.

And as the Norfolk-based Blue Crew prepare to depart in a few weeks for another five-month tour, replacing the Puller’s Gold Crew, a half dozen sailors are in the combat systems cubicle, getting a typical at-sea briefing before starting a watch. A a few steps farther down the corridor Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Jones, an aviation boatswains mate, is poring over the latest technical briefs and updates on aviation fuel handling.

“We don’t have the usual phased in for readiness, we have to be always combat ready,” said Capt. Daryle Cardone, the Blue Crew commanding officer.

“We could be here in Norfolk on Monday and on Friday, in contested waters with an Iranian-flag vessel approaching.”

During the Blue Crew’s last deployment in Bahrain, it was Petty Officer 3rd Class Kendra Barrow -- whose official job is cook -- who was scrambling up to the flight deck to document encounters with Iranian navy ships.

For the past several years, a partnership between VIMS, the Nature Conservancy and UVA has been working to develop the world's first seagrass carbon credit program. (Other carbon markets linked to forests and the like already exist.) It will allow the state, which owns the huge seagrass acreage on the seaside Eastern Shore, to sell a small amount of carbon credits linked to the major seagrass restoration that's been happening there. Buyers could include companies that wish to have carbon offsets, for example.

The Chrysler Museum of Art is no stranger to flooding.

On any given day with a high tide or following a storm, staff and visitors can expect to see water pooling around the building, which sits across from the Hague, or blocking streets that lead to it.

With a pair of new exhibitions, the museum is putting the issue even further at the forefront.

The “FloodZone” exhibit features the absorbing work of a Florida photographer capturing the relationship between rising waters and urban development. The other, “Waters Rising,” focuses on Hampton Roads, using research out of Old Dominion University’s Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience. Both are on display through May 29.

Together they’re intended to inform the observer as well as provide a glimpse of what’s to come.

Like most college students, Trajan “Trey” Baker has often shopped for school supplies at Target. But when he walked into the retail giant’s Hampton store last month, he was looking for something much more special: his own hoodie on the racks.

Baker, a 20-year-old junior architecture major at Hampton University, was one of three winners of a nationwide student design contest for Target’s 2022 Black History Month collection. His design will be on sweatshirts and journals in stores across the country and online through February.

Colin Smith started making healthy prepared and customized meals for family and friends in 2018. Before long, friends of friends began to inquire and a year later he created his business, Lyfestyle Meals. After three years operating within a local commissary kitchen, Smith decided to open a brick and mortar at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The location provides weekly deliveries throughout Hampton Roads and ready made meals to go.
