COMING SUNDAY:

Two Democratic Congresswomen held onto their seats in competitive races in northern Virginia. But in Hampton Roads’ 2nd Congressional District, Republican challenger Jen Kiggans ousted Democrat Elaine Luria, a two-time incumbent who outspent her opponent.

So, what went wrong for Democrats in Tidewater? Two political science experts say it can largely be summed up in one word: Redistricting.

The small plastic models sat on the table with the 3D printer while the large machine trundled to life in the Jefferson neighborhood of Newport News.

Instead of plastic, the machine was using a specific cement mix to create the walls for 1,200-square-foot, three bedroom and two bathroom house compared to the miniature.

Corrine Mann, 32, excitedly walked around the construction site of her home talking with onlookers, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg staff and Alquist 3D builders.

“I think it’s going to be the future,” said Mann, a single mother and lab technician with an 11-year-old daughter named Aubrey.

In the City Council race to represent a large swath of the Virginia Beach resort area, candidate Worth Remick is on top. He leads Linwood Branch by nearly 200 votes for District 6.

On Monday, all outstanding votes will be counted and the election will be certified, according to the city registrar.

Remick, a newcomer to politics, claimed victory the day after the election, crediting a boots-on-the-ground approach to campaigning. Like many candidates, he knocked on thousands of doors, networked at dozens of events and greeted voters at the polls. Remick also sent mailers to voters.

The messages on the mailers directly targeted his strongest opponent. He claimed that Branch, who is currently serving on City Council, supports “back room deals” to help a “preferred developer.” The word “cronyism” appeared several times.

Did those claims against Branch sway voters?

It’s been decades since the first time a teenager told Cynthia Vacca Davis that he was gay, but the conversation still haunts her.

The former Christian youth group leader remembers the way the gangly boy’s eyes flickered to her face before returning to his fidgeting hands. As she sat on a beanbag chair across from him, she felt as shaky as he sounded, dreading what she knew she was supposed to say next.

The Virginia Arts Festival is going big for its 26th anniversary season, bringing one of the biggest names in music history in May.

A hint: People say I’m the life of the party ‘cause I tell a joke or two ...

Smokey Robinson, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, prolific composer, living legend, is only one of several highlights of the festival schedule.

The festival announced its 2022-23 season Thursday morning and it includes dance performances by acclaimed troupes such as the Mark Morris Dance Group, which the VAF co-commissioned to create a work set to the music of Burt Bacharach. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns in April with performances in Newport News and Norfolk. The Philadelphia Ballet performs “Swan Lake” in April, followed in May by Ballet Hispánico dancing in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

Jade and Mauricio Fuentes turned their love for vintage vehicles into a small side business.

The Virginia Beach couple, high school sweethearts and real estate agents with Rose & Womble Realty, owned their share of antique cars, but it was a 1970 Volkswagen bus that won their hearts.

The iconic vehicle has been in high demand for events and photo shoots across the country, as evidenced by photos shared on social media. Armed with a marketing background, Jade Fuentes decided to showcase Isla Photo Bus solely on Instagram in summer 2021.
