MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter - where yours truly here at Reader Rewards has not had to sit in line YET to fuel up! The sight of long lines snaking out of gas stations into parking lots and out onto main thoroughfares - almost feels like the '70s again?? Ok - so I may be dating myself and others here, but anyone else have flashbacks to waiting in long summer lines back in the '70s to wait for gas? If you missed the recap on why local gas stations are running out - check out The Pilot's and Daily Press' coverage here. Here's to hoping this ends soon!  At least before yours truly has to fill up.  Ah, the benefits of owning a Prius!

Every week for quite some time now we've tried to focus on the progress and positive news around the COVID-19 challenge.  Yet more this week - today as a matter of fact!  Check it out here! Yes - the CDC changed guidance on mask-wearing today, for those that are fully vaccinated.  While outdoors in crowds and in most indoor settings - you can drop the mask!  It's gotten to the point where might we feel naked without one?  For any of you that skipped that second dose - you might want to reconsider.  The Pilot's Elisha Sauers covered the large group that so far have chosen to skip that second dose.

Once again - you know we cannot go without a reference to the Hampton Roads food scene - covered by The Pilot's Matthew Korfhage.  Matthew covers Sydney Meers' opening of his newest restaurant in Norfolk: Syd's FishPig Cafe. Check out Matthew's thorough coverage here!

COMING SUNDAY:

The Chesapeake Black Pastors Coalition formed in the wake of George Floyd's death. The group and other city activists led a march to City Hall last summer where they called upon the city to update police training policies and other steps around equity. They've been meeting regularly with the city ever since. A timely follow up on where the group stands now and what action the city has or hasn't taken since.

The state is still investigating the cause of a massive roof collapse at TNCC — the building is still too unstable for investigators. But the building is almost certainly a complete loss that will take years to replace.

About 160,000 Virginians have gotten a coronavirus vaccine that requires two shots but haven’t returned for their second doses. To take a closer look at how many people might be missing their boosters, the Virginia Department of Health recently pulled data on residents who received a first dose of Pfizer or Moderna but, more than six weeks later, still hadn’t come back to complete the two-shot regimen. More than 9% of Virginians who got initial shots are overdue for their second ones, a concerning trend for state public health officials who say those individuals won’t be considered fully vaccinated unless they receive both.

  • By now, Sydney Meers seems so central to the character of Hampton Roads food that you’d have to invent him if he didn’t already exist.

Through more than three decades and a multitude of restaurants, he has been an idiosyncratic and somewhat mischievous and inescapable presence in local restaurants. A deep-Southern transplant from truck-stop Senatobia, Mississippi, Meers makes mid-Atlantic food as personal as a heart attack — with personality as towering as his heirloom pork pie.

You could consider Meers’ new Syd’s FishPig Cafe, located in Norfolk’s Selden Market, a bit of a victory lap. It is, in part, a greatest hits compilation pulling together decades’ worth of flavors onto its fast-rotating menu. And if he has the ingredients on hand, Meers said he’ll dig through his files to make any of his dishes that you can remember.

The murder of Heren Cabacar stands out among cold cases. Before being gunned down in the streets of Portsmouth in 1981 for the change in his pockets, Cabacar had survived the Bataan Death March of WW2 and three years as a POW during the Korean War. In the decades since his death, his family has faithfully called PPD to make sure the case isn’t forgotten. But a few years ago, they were informed the file could no longer be found. After a call from The Pilot, police now say they’ve at least located the case file.
