MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  If you were wondering, yes - yours truly here at Reader Rewards was out for a little R & R last week.  Hence - no newsletter. We forgot to drop a note in the newsletter a couple weeks ago - our apologies for any confusion.  We're back and better than ever!  While we were away the COVID restrictions formally dropped off here in Hampton Roads!  Capacity and distancing requirement are formally gone now.  If you missed Katherine Hafner's report from last Friday, check it out here.  While we still have some work to do on the vaccinization front - it's certainly good to moving back towards a form of normalcy, right??  As we've noted in this space previously - we think it's because of the mantra we adopted last summer: wear a mask, keep six feet of distance and wash hands frequently!  COVID or not: the last part wouldn't hurt to stay with!

As COVID slowly fades away, we learned earlier this week that our new menace is.....nutria??  The giant-sized rodent that's known as an invasive species locally actually gave The Pilot's Joanne Kimberlin the "heebie-jeebies".  For those that know of the "heebie-jeebies" - it's serious business and not to be played with.  Catch Joanne's report here, if you missed it.

I'm sure a good number of us locally have been keeping an eye on the housing market for one reason or another.  Well, did you hear about the most recent house to hit the market?  The Trent House down in Deep Creek - all of 162 years old - is up for sale. If you missed it, read up on Denise Watson's report here. Unless we all plan to put a blind bid in immediately....

Some positive local sports news: how about both Old Dominion University AND Norfolk State University qualifying for the NCAA College Baseball tournament?? ODU is actually ranked #14 nationally and landed a top seed in one of the regional brackets.  Check it out here.

On the professional sports front - yes, the NBA playoffs are underway.  Will the defending NBA Champion Lakers survive beyond June 3rd?  Let's end discussion of that topic right now.

COMING SUNDAY:

To incentivize people to get a vaccine, CVS is offering a sweepstakes with rewards including Super Bowl tickets and 7-day cruises. Some states are offering $1 million through their lottery systems. Story is taking a look at what Virginia officials are thinking about this reward structure (if VDH will be offering anything along those lines, for instance), as well as the psychology of what sort of messaging actually works to prompt people to get their shot.

Virginia schools will spend about $1.1 billion this fiscal year alone on construction, and those costs aren’t going away soon.

About 41% of public schools are at or above capacity, and half are over 50 years old. Replacing just those older schools could cost nearly $25 billion, according to a report compiled by the Virginia Department of Education.

The study was requested by the Commission on School Construction and Modernization, tasked last year by the General Assembly with making funding recommendations for the state.

When retired Navy sailor Gregory Curtis killed Courtney Dwyer, a mother of three who, in Newport News in late March, and then killed himself, the case didn't get much attention. In fact, the police didn't identify Curtis as the killer, given that they have a policy against releasing the names of suicide victims. But when the family finally got Curtis' name, they are trying to get his Florida burial with honors reversed, and his body exhumed.

This summer, a very old name will hang in a very new location: Rodman’s Bar-B-Que has found a new home.

For as long as anyone alive can remember, the Rodman name has been synonymous with barbecue in Hampton Roads, ever since Roy Rodman started selling his vinegar-tanged pork to Portsmouth churches around 1929.

From its original Portsmouth location to where it stood for 50 years — a voluminous and bare-bones Suffolk barn on the Rodman family plot along Shoulders Hill Road — the pulled pork and fried chicken at Rodman’s Bar-B-Que have been woven into the fabric of Tidewater living.

With the transportation industry revving its engines back up for travelers and                eventgoers, local limousine companies are looking to rebuild their teams.

Abdou Brahim, owner of VA Executive Sedan and Limo Service in Virginia                   Beach, went from a dozen chauffeurs before the pandemic to two.

Brahim, who started the business eight years ago, said last year’s prom,                       wedding and concert seasons were crushed, but they are beginning to see a               slow uptick this year.
