MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where hints of spring abound!  Today's weather excluded, of course. Some warmth and sun to tease us.  We're ALMOST out of February too!  Football is gone, we're not quite to March Madness for NCAA basketball, the NBA is at its All-Star break and MLB players are locked out.  We're SO close to spring and the renewal that comes with it!  Along with the pollen, we all know.

Given the unfortunate and sad news out of Europe in the last 24 hours, we will go out of our way here at Reader Rewards to focus on inclusive and positive local highlights we can all lean on.

Here at Reader Rewards we have always tried to highlight the local food and restaurant scene.  If you missed out on Pilot Correspondent Robey Martin's recent report on the still fairly new Love Song restaurant in Virginia Beach - it's worth a read right here. A restaurant with high-spirited staff, high energy environment and a menu of wild and different dishes?  Not to mention the name of the restaurant itself!

Still in Virgina Beach, check out Stacy Parker's report here from The Pilot - on the design for the new African American cultural center. A museum in the shape of a drum - where in African culture a drum is used as a communication tool - such an appropriate and fitting design.  While it will not open for awhile, we look forward to it!  As some of us may very well look forward to Virginia Beach becoming the home of BMX action and action sports in general.  The Pilot's Stacy Parkers has this overview as well - right here.  Staying on the topic of Hampton Roads growth prospects - Military Circle continues to take small steps toward redevelopment.  Most important is the impact and influence that local stars may have on this developement.  Pharrell Williams and Bruce Smith both are involved with developers that will make proposals to the city of Norfolk.  The Pilot's Trevor Metcalfe has the report right here if you missed it.

Lastly, we'll wrap it up with an incredible local sports story.  We may be wading through a relatively-speaking "down" time with sports - but local high school wrestlers would beg to differ.  This is the time of year where wrestling peaks and finishes up with state championships.  Not many more stories could be uplifting than the story of Landstown High School's Adonis Lattimore.  If you have not read the story and coverage of Adonis winning a state championship this past weekend - be sure to catch The Pilot's Jami Frankenberry's and Ray Nimmo's report right here. Should give us all a different and brighter perspective on life!

COMING SUNDAY:

The Norfolk City Council is considering a redistricting proposal that would shift the boundaries of four of the city’s five wards.

Under the proposal, made by the city’s planning department, Ward 2′s Wesley precinct would become part of Ward 1 and Ward 5′s Azalea Gardens precinct would become part of Ward 4. The change would also move Azalea Gardens from Superward 6 to Superward 7.

The redistricting recommendations are meant to help balance the city’s population equally across its five wards and two superwards following completion of the 2020 U.S. Census population count. Based on the city’s latest population count, the target population for each ward is 47,991 people. The superward population target is 119,978 people.

Steven J. Kung remembers going to Providence Elementary School in Virginia Beach and kids teasing him because he is Taiwanese. They called him “Chinese boy” and “King Kong,” asked if he knew kung fu, and mocked Asian accents. The teasing, Kung said, came from stereotypes in TV and film, making him a lot more aware of media representation — seeing people who look like him on television and in movies.

He became a director to change the way Asian people are portrayed and has directed episodes of “Fresh Off the Boat” on ABC and Netflix’s “Dear White People.”

Most recently, Kung was chosen for the Paramount Directing Initiative, which helps directors from underrepresented groups develop their careers. He’ll meet with network and studio executives, shadow a director on multiple CBS productions, get branding and portfolio help, and get support once the program ends in December.

Jamestown Gunpowder carries hints of maple and smoky vanilla, a simultaneous nod to local battlefields and pancake houses.

Williamsburg Port is named for a wine available in Colonial times, offering the tangy flavor of a Merlot with no alcohol. Yorktown Patty is a comforting combination of dark chocolate and peppermint notes.

The Historic Triangle Trio teas are among more than 100 loose leaf blends sold by Discover Teas, a Williamsburg-based business that ships to customers across the United States.

“I grew up on tea bags — they’re very convenient,” said owner Mai-Anh Tran. “But there’s an extra depth of freshness and flavor in loose leaf that I recommend everyone experiences, even people who think they don’t like tea.”

Tran runs Discover Teas as a one-woman show, continuing a business launched in 2011 by Chris Farishon and herbalist Ken Roberts. Once a loyal customer and later an employee, Tran took over in 2017 with Emily Kamp, who left last summer.

With a background in hazardous substance training, Savannah Kuntz is aware of the science behind candles and indoor air quality.

So when Kuntz, a Coast Guard lieutenant, started Even Keel Candle Co. in October 2020, she focused on sustainably sourced and ethically made hand-poured vegan soy candles.

“By making your own, I know exactly what goes into them and exactly what doesn’t,” Kuntz said.

Her candle-making dates back 10 years, when she started it as a hobby. Friends and family members received candles as gifts and as her knowledge expanded, it kindled her interest in the clean candle industry.

During the pandemic, Kuntz, like many, spent more time in her Virginia Beach home and decided to create a side business.

Within the first three months of launching, Kuntz said she had shipped her products to every state in the U.S.
