MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  Well, it is hard to believe Labor Day weekend is upon us.  Doesn't it just feel like we were all just celebrating the unofficial beginning of the summer vacation season with Memorial Day staring us right in the face??  In years past the Virginia Beach Oceanfront would be preparing for the Rock N' Roll Half Marathon and the American Music Festival.  Not this year, however.  It's a sure bet that many will be down at the oceanfront to enjoy one last sunny/warm weekend.  If you missed the report from The Pilot's Stacy Parker on the anticipated crowds and business for the oceanfront this weekend - check out her report right here. Either way - traffic will be much lighter on 264 East after this weekend!

While we're still on the topic of one last summer weekend with sunny/warm weather - how about some icea cream?!  Namely the iconic Doumar's ice cream waffle cones.  Hard to believe a fourth generation is taking over at Doumar's. Be sure to check out the report by The Pilot's Billy Schuerman right here.  If you haven't stopped by Doumar's for one of those waffle cones - do so!

If you're wondering whether there are more foodie events around Hampton Roads this holiday weekend - YES!  And as usual The Pilot's Rekaya Gibson has ALL the event details right here.  Wine, shrimp AND crab festivals???  Enjoy!

Labor Day weekend also aligns with the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament.  This is relevant for us here in Hampton Roads in that Hampton University's student band played at the U.S. Open this week.  If you missed it - The Daily Press' Caitlyn Burchett has coverage for you right here.

Speaking of sports - namely local sports - college football is BACK!  What better way to kick off the season here in Hampton Roads than the matchup between Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech, with Old Dominion hosting the game Friday night.  The Pilot's David Hall has an Old Dominion preview of the upcoming game and season right here. Keep in mind that Old Dominion has now transitioned into the Sun Belt Conference.  For a preview of the Sun Belt Conference - check out The Pilot's Jami Frankenberry's coverage right here. For the Virginia Tech alums wondering whether there is a preview for the Tech football team - YES.  Check out correspondent coverage by Steve Hemphill right here. Should be a great start to a new year for both teams.

In future years when Old Dominion makes the trek to Blacksburg to play Virginia Tech - travel by rail could very well be MUCH quicker than now.  The Pilot's Katie King has coverage on a proposed new train route between Hampton Roads and Blacksburg.  Check out Katie's coverage right here.

Last week high school football got started....if you are wondering if the 757Teamz Top 15 rankings changed from the preseason rankings, check out the new poll by The Pilot's Jami Frankenberry right here.

Yes, I know - enough already.  On to contests and a holiday weekend!  Enjoy and stay safe everyone!

COMING SUNDAY:

The Elizabeth River Project’s latest work doesn’t fight the rising tide. It will roll with it.

The environmental group is constructing a 6,500-foot resilience lab along Colley Avenue and Knitting Mill Creek. The building has an intentional life span of about 30 to 50 years; when sea levels reach a certain height, the structure can be disassembled and moved to allow a living shoreline, that’s part of the design, to take its place. The outdoor pavilion will float when the area floods, and is meant as a refuge for people who canoe down the river-like streets after a deluge or for those caught outside.

Glass artists Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Ryswyck want us to look down.

To look at the sand under our feet and think about the people who have lived on it. The events of captivity and liberation on the beach at Fort Monroe National Monument in Hampton. The sand at the Oceanfront that cradled the knee of a person proposing marriage. The joy someone finds in digging into the yard of their first home.

The Dutch artists have created a crowd-sourced exhibition, “To See a World in a Grain of Sand,” that is on display at the Chrysler Museum of Art through Jan. 22.

The show contains 270 samples from around the globe, several of them from local areas including Fort Monroe, Naval Station Norfolk by the USS Cole Memorial, the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach, and a long-lost baseball field in Portsmouth.

Three years ago, Jay Hutchins watched a dilapidated old gas station near his family’s flower shop transform into a performing arts venue.

Hutchins, a drummer back in high school and a theater major in college, soon came to enjoy Sunday afternoon jam sessions with the building’s owner, Ray Friend, a guitarist. He eventually joined the board of Friend’s fledgling arts nonprofit, Flat Iron Crossroads, and embraced its mission of offering culturally diverse shows and educational workshops.

When Friend decided to retire this year for family reasons, he offered to sell the 2-acre property to Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, a nearby flower bulb company and garden store in Gloucester County. Hutchins is the general manager at the longtime local business.
