MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where we're halfway through January and we've avoided any of the white stuff!  I know, I know - perhaps I have now jinxed us...we'll now face a major snowstorm right??  If we can just clear February.  Of course all kids in grade school would groan hearing yours truly say THAT right??

Before we clear February, we're not yet out of January.  A time of year for a fresh start in many ways.  To include the "dry January" bandwagon.  If you missed it, be sure to check out The Pilot's Rekaya Gibson and her review of a recently opened sober bar in Portsmouth that caters to dry January.  You can catch Rekaya's review right here.  35% of Americans surveyed LAST year? Quite impressive.  Before we get too far away from the new year and fresh starts...how about the story of the married couple starting over here in Virginia Beach from the midwest and finding a love letter in a bottle while walking on the beach?  A must read, if you haven't already.  You can catch the story by The Pilot's Stacy Parker right here. The letter was dated the same day as the wife's birthday?? Incredible.

While the new year can bring about fresh starts and beginnings - sometimes it is about closure and moving on.  That has unfortunately been the case for small bookstores over the years - to include one in Portsmouth.  A bookstore that needed to find a home for more than 270,000 books.  Sandra Pennecke from Inside Business has the coverage right here - of how this bookstore found a home for all those books. Fortunately the new home was only about needing for find a new location for the store!

Speaking of items that need a new home - have you heard about WHRO and its giveaway of albums and CDs?  The Pilot's Colin Warren-Hicks has coverage right here - of their giveaway of 20,000 albums and CDs. Yes - one of the largest known collections in the state of Virginia!

How about some good news for the city of Norfolk, huh?  Much has been written and discussed about the changes that have come to Wards Corner over the years.  Well how about adding a new Target retail store??  The Pilot's Trevor Metcalfe has the story right here. A national retailer like Target would be quite the success story for Wards Corner, for sure.

Don't worry - we've not forgotten about making sure you're up to speed on community events around Hampton Roads.  As usual - The Pilot's Rekaya Gibson has the rundown for you right here. Beer school 101 and a charcuterie and butter board class upcoming?  Sounds like opportunities to prepare for spring and summer at the very least??

Yes, football season is fading fast into the rearview mirror as The Superbowl approaches.  Never fear though - we have all your local high school basketball news and scores right here.  Check out 757Teamz most recent boys basketball Top 15 right here.

Have a great weekend!

COMING SUNDAY:

More and more colleges and universities are doing away with their ACT or SAT requirements as they search for ways to put “more emphasis on the whole student.” Likewise, fewer Hampton Roads students are taking these tests once required to get into their choice schools.

Princess Anne High School senior Kerah Howeth has taken on as leadership roles in band throughout her high school career, from wind ensemble to leading a brass choir. Even if she were not planning on studying music, it was that experience that would show universities that she was a well-rounded student and better reflected who she was as a student.

The owner of the party bus that crashed last month in York County, killing three people, says it was friends and family she lost in the fatal crash.

Towanda Futrell, owner of Futrell’s Party Adventures, LLC, was among the 23 passengers on the bus when it collided with a tractor trailer on Interstate 64 and crashed into a guardrail. Speaking out for the first time since the Dec. 16 crash.

“The trauma is real,” said Futrell, who is recovering from a broken right ankle, a sprained left ankle, and injuries to her face and jaw that she sustained in the crash. “But we keep going, we keep each other going,” she said, indicating her family who survived the crash.

Futrell, 41, spoke from her Norfolk home, seated in her living room surrounded by family — her daughters, Tanija Futrell and Tyquira Rogers; her nephew, Darrell Rogers; and the father of her grandson, Antonio Hardee. All five were on the bus, and recounted harrowing details from the crash and its aftermath.

When Robert Roman and Claus Ihlemann recently entered a rehearsal for the Virginia Opera’s production of “Fellow Travelers.” The Travelers,” the actors, directors and musicians looked at the couple holding hands and wondered who they were.

Then Linda Sands, the opera’s director of development, gestured toward them.

“This production would not be possible without their support and enthusiasm,” she said.

Roman and Ihlemann paid most of the costs of “Fellow Travelers,” which will open Friday at Harrison Opera House in Norfolk.

The businessmen, who own Norfolk’s Decorum Furniture store and Palace Shops & Station, spent $15,000 to ensure that the opera’s story of suspicion, prejudice and bigotry toward the LGBTQ community would be performed in Hampton Roads.

A landmark nestled in the heart of the Olde Towne district of downtown Portsmouth illustrates how Hampton Roads’ rich history provides opportunities for contemporary arts, culture and business.

“My hopes are that Cambridge Hall will serve as an event hall for the citizens of Hampton Roads and eventually a music school for children in the near future,” said owner Ed O’Brien, a district agent for New York Life in Norfolk.

The doors of the historic and iconic building at 441 Washington St. are open to the public again after a stint of dormancy following its century of existence as a school. O’Brien acquired and renovated the building with the prospect of bringing music and education back into its halls for the first time since 1991.
