MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where yours truly here at Reader Rewards is done with all things turkey for awhile.  In agreement?  Same with pumpkin pie.  Hopefully everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday with friends and family!  Now - on to that hustling and bustling time of the year - Christmas!  With an extra week in between no less.

Speaking of Christmas and Santa Claus - how about the rumor of Santa trading in his sleigh for something a bit different for this year's trip?  If you missed it, catch the story by The Pilot's Caitlyn Burchett right here. Ok - so maybe that MH-60S was just a test drive to compare against the reindeer and sleigh.  We'll see I suppose!

Even with the temperatures dropping, there are still plenty of events to partake in around Hampton Roads.  As usual, The Pilot's Rekaya Gibson has the run-down of those events right here!  A vodka vendor fair.  Don't believe me - check it out.  Brunch and gingerbread houses and dining with Santa - more like it!

Staying with the holiday theme and the food/drink scene - if you haven't heard of the pop-up cocktail business that opened up for the holidays, serving up holiday-themed cocktails...be sure to check out Rekaya's review of Miracle right here.  After a days' worth of Christmas shopping - we all might need something from Miracle!  Before we get too far away from the food scene, you also might want to check out the new shop at Selden Arcade that serves up macarons and artisan coffees.  Once again Rekaya has the preview for you right here of Cafe Genevieve. Who knows - you might want to pair these locations up: holiday-themed cocktails AND french pastries!

We always try to highlight unique and/or positive stories here at Reader Rewards.  Did you see the story recently about what might very well be the oldest practicing attorney in the country - at 100 years old?? Yes - practicing law for 74 years.  Be sure to read up on The Pilot's Peter Dujardin and his feature on Stanley Sacks right here.  74 years old would be a life well-lived.  Practicing law for 74 years??  Absolutely incredible.

We're all well aware of how many enjoy coming to the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach to vacation during the summer.  Well, now Virginia Beach has landed on Conde' Nast Traveler magazine's list of 23 best places to vacation in the country.  The Pilot's Stacy Parker has the story right here. This is before the new surf park opens up in a couple years!

Remember awhile back when yours truly wondered whether The Commanders' Taylor Heinicke might experience another surprise run like he did when he got the starting QB job at ODU?  Well, he's 5-1 since being named the starting QB for Washington.  The Pilot's Jami Frankenberry has the story on the perks he's received since - right here. You just never know what may happen the rest of this season.

Who would have thought that with the football programs at UVA, Virginia Tech, ODU, JMU - that the biggest story heading into this weekend would be at William & Mary??  Well, that certainly is the case.  The Daily Press' Marty O'Brien has the preview of this weekend's FCS game right here. Best of luck to The Tribe!

With December comes the arrival of high school basketball!  757Teamz' Larry Rubama has the preseason overview for boys basketball right here.  Right along with this, 757Teamz' Marty O'Brien has the same for the girls basketball season here as well.

COMING SUNDAY:

In March, Laura Ellis stood in a cobbled street in Nepal, staring at the clouds capping the Himalayan mountains. She was considering hiking Mount Everest, the range’s highest peak. It was her first time at the Himalayas and she commented that they were huge. Pinco, her guide, laughed. She was looking at the spurs, the lower rim of the mountains. It would be a three-day hike to get to the base, he told her.

Ellis wasn’t daunted when she looked up the face of Everest. She decided to come back and conquer it.

Ellis, who lives in Virginia Beach, has worked as an elementary and middle school teacher, firefighter and art restorer, and now rents vacation homes and cleans swimming pools half the year so that she can “go adventuring” the rest. Her latest goal is to climb the “Seven Summits,” the highest mountain on each continent, during the next 18 months. First, in September, she scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. She’ll tackle Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest peak in the Western hemisphere, before the end of the year. She will save Everest for last.

Solomon always seems to know which people need him most.

At the University of Virginia after the Nov. 13 shooting deaths of three football players, the 70-pound Golden Retriever walked straight toward a student who turned out to be grieving - for the campus tragedy and the recent loss of his own dog.

Solomon rested his furry head on the young man’s shoulder, wagged his tail and relaxed for a long hug.

“He gives people a release for their stress and grief,” said Terri Scungio, who traveled with him to Charlottesville for a night. “He’s nothing but pure love.”

Solomon, 3½, is a specially-trained comfort animal who joined King of Glory Lutheran Church in James City County in 2021. Since then, he has traveled to nursing homes, hospitals, fire stations, veterans’ programs, schools, a police funeral and the sites of major tragedies, including November’s mass shootings at the University of Virginia and the Wal-mart in Chesapeake.

Dreaming of a French patisserie but can’t travel to Paris?

Café Genevieve, a Paris-inspired shop specializing in macarons and artisan coffees, offers the taste and experience without the nine-hour flight.

Genevieve Malarkey’s love for French culture inspired her to open the café in June. She wanted to re-create an environment reminiscent of the European city inside Selden Market. She succeeded.

A seasoned Virginia Beach brewer plans to open a combined craft brewery and cidery in the Bridgeport area of North Suffolk in the spring of 2023.

Sojourn Fermentory’s 9,200-square-foot building will include a tasting and dining room, full kitchen and outdoor biergarten, co-owner and head brewer Michael Pawley said. Focused on consumer education, the spot will host special events, beer and cider tastings, food pairings, charity fundraisers, community festivals and private parties, he said.

Armed with a chemistry degree and a strong love of beer, Pawley relocated to Hampton Roads when he “threw his name into a hat” for a brewery job five years ago. Backed by his experience at two Virginia Beach breweries — Commonwealth Brewing Co. and Back Bay Brew House Farmhouse — Pawley and two business partners, Scott Osborne and Jinson Chan, decided to launch their own venture.
