MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where yours truly here at Reader Rewards is staring out the window at that grey, dreary, cold and wet weather that I suppose we all knew was coming soon.  The good news though: we're one day closer to CHRISTMAS!  It is definitely the time of year for Christmas dinners, parties and baking cookies!  If you don't believe me, The Pilot's Rekaya Gibson has the rundown on just these kinds of events around Hampton Roads - right here. Wine and cookies?  Candy canes and cocktails Christmas party??  Count me in!

This is also the time of year where doing good for others is top of mind.  With all the tragedy that came from the mass shooting at Walmart off of Battlefield Blvd in Chesapeake, some might be wondering when that store will reopen and what will they do with all the goods in the store.  The Pilot's Trevor Metcalfe has the story on what Walmart has been doing with that store's merchandise. Check out Trevor's coverage right here.  Finding a way to help families and children in need - definitely a bright spot out of that tragic situation for Walmart.

Staying on the positive/local news front - if you missed Missy Elliot's commencement speech at Norfolk State University this past weekend, be sure to check out the coverage by The Pilot's Kelsey Kendall, right here. In addition to giving the keynote speech at commencement, Missy presented a check to NSU in the amount of $20,000 to help in the areas of greatest need.  Such a great story and so encouraging to see a local start continue to give back to Hampton Roads.

Shifting gears a bit...is it just me or was anyone else caught a bit off guard with the announcement of Portsmouth's casino opening up in January?  With all the talk around the casino at Harbor Park, this one snuck up on me.  If you missed it, The Pilot's Natalie Anderson has the story on the soon-to-be-opened Rivers Casino Portsmouth - right here. 1,500 slot machines, two dozen poker tables and 10 restaurants.  Who would have thought this just, say - five short years ago??

On the sports front, this time of year brings about college football bowl games.  43 of them to be exact.  Yikes.  Even more yikes: only one school from the entire commonwealth of Virginia will be in a bowl game this year.  Liberty University.  If you can stand it - enjoy all 43!!

In the spirit of keeping our focus on local high school sports - for all those interested in field hockey, Sian Wilkerson from 757Teamz presents the first and second team All-Tidewater field hockey teams.  You can check out those teams right here.  Definitely a sport growing in popularity.

Congratulations to Phoebus High School for coming back home with its 9th state championship since 2001.  Nine championships in ten visits to the title game - not bad.  If you missed the recap of the championship route of Heritage High - catch The Daily Press' Marty O'Brien's coverage right here. What might be more incredible than the undefeated season Phoebus had this year?  How about the potential for what NEXT year might look like given the returning players.  Marty also has an review on what fueled The Phantoms success this year and an early preview on next years team - right here.

COMING SUNDAY:

“USS Gerald R. Ford: The Biggest and Baddest” reads a t-shirt in the store aboard the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier. The slogan appeared again on a poster not far from the galley. And it was repeated by the ship’s captain as he overlooked the flight deck from the bridge.

Since the early 2000′s, the Navy has marketed the Ford as the future of American warships. The ship — 1,106 feet in length — is jam-packed with 23 never-before-seen technologies meant to “carry the Navy into the 21st Century.”

“This will be the most powerful warship our Navy has put to sea — probably any Navy ever,” said Paul Lanzilotta, commander of the USS Gerald R. Ford.

But supporters of the Ford say the warship’s $13 billion price tag gave it a bad name, with the cost overshadowing the Ford’s capabilities.

At $4 billion over budget, the ship is the costliest single item on the Department of Defense’s shopping list — a stigma the Navy has struggled to shake while working to differentiate it from Nimitz-class carriers, which come at a fraction of the price.

It’s a Friday night in early December, and Santa is a having a rough day.

Santa Vic looks around the room he’s rented for his Movie Night With Santa on the third floor of an office building at the corner of Market Street and Monticello Avenue in downtown Norfolk.

It’s 5 p.m. already. The space still looks like it’s drab, white-walled and empty conference room self, when it needs to be a Winter Wonderland. Children and their parents will begin arriving in hour.

Santa’s father-in-law struggles to attach the movie projection screen to its stand without reading any directions. He slowly slips poles into the plastic screen as if he were setting up a camping tent.

Another of Santa’s helpers, his mother-in-law, Patricia Bryant, busies herself behind a table toward the back of the big room. She pours kernels into a popcorn machine and places an assortment of chocolate chip and macadamia nut cookies on a tray.

Chris Simmonds has options for those who want to ring in the new year without a hangover.

Ceremony — a dry bottle shop — opened in the Ghent area of Norfolk more than two years ago and it offers curated alcohol-free beers, wines, spirits and mixers. Its ready-to-drink selection is good for nondrinkers, expectant mothers, people taking medications and people living sober. Simmonds, a drinker himself, enjoys having a drink after a long day without a headache the next morning.

Ceremony is part of Simmonds’ company, Less Than — a zero-waste and refill shop offering goods such as hand and dish soap, toothpaste tablets, and laundry detergent and pods. Both businesses are under the same roof in four locations in Hampton Roads and one in Richmond. Another one is coming soon to Midlothian.

Simmonds was born in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and grew up in Virginia Beach. He graduated from Salem High School and Old Dominion University. He saw a need for more nonalcoholic options in the community, so he opened a business.

It’s been several decades since Claus Ihlemann made his way from his native Denmark to the United States to make his mark on the Hampton Roads furniture and design industry.

The founder and president of Decorum Furniture at 301 W. 21st St. in Norfolk has announced he is selling his landmark business to three of his employees.

“You reach a point where you say, ‘I’m at retirement age,’” Ihlemann said. “And with that in mind, we shifted to a management team model for operating the business.”

The three acting directors of operations, Robin Johnston, Shawn Griffey and Alzenio Cortado, will purchase the business over the next five to seven years.

The deal, structured as a Popeye plan, will enable Ihlemann to step back from the day-to-day operations and act as an adviser.
