MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Alas - fall is here!  Yes, September 22nd brought us the offical first day of fall.  Even so, it just doesn't feel like a spiced pumpkin latte or a spiced pumpkin flavored coffee yet - does it?? I mean, technically we should still be on the lookout for hurricane activity out in the Atlantic.  Not to mention it is still warm and humid during the day.

All that said - Busch Gardens Williamsburg is back in action with Howl-O-Scream!  Howl-O-Scream had a one year hiatus due to COVID-19, but it's back and better than ever this year.  The Pilot's Saleen Martin has tips on navigating Howl-O-Scream right here.  Yours truly here at Reader Rewards has already checked it out - it's worth a visit - especially if haunted houses/territories are your "thing" AND it wasn't around in 2020. Speaking of events returning - although slowly but surely - from a year hiatus: The Pilot's Denise Watson has coverage on two different beer festivals this weekend.  Check out Denise' preview coverage right here! One in Norfolk and one in Williamsburg: Hampton Roads is covered!

One last tidbit on the local entertainment front: how about Earth Wind & Fire performing locally this evening(Friday) in Portsmouth??  Check out the write-up/preview here if you're interested or if you missed it.

Before we move too far away from the topic of the arrival of fall - one of the more popular retailers for seasonal decorations, Hobby Lobby - is opening up another location here in Hampton Roads.  The Pilot's Sandra Pennecke has the coverage here - if you missed it.

On local sports scene - how about the feel-good/positive story concerning ODU alum Taylor Heinicke?? If you missed Jami Frankenberry's recap on the game-winning drive he had for The Washington Football Team against The New York Giants - catch it right here.  Quite the story - very similar to how he won the starting QB job at ODU years ago. Heck, now he's parlayed it into a beer endorsement!  No, not Heineken - check out Jami's follow up story on Taylor's beer endorsement right here.

COMING SUNDAY:

School districts across Hampton Roads saw a decline last year in the rate of students who received the required sequence of immunizations to be eligible for enrollment in a public school, according to state data.

The state’s rate of students who were “adequately vaccinated” — meaning they got all doses of the vaccines required under state law — was just over 88% last year, down from just over 96% in 2019, Virginia Department of Health data shows. Similar trends occurred nationwide.

The state’s number of under-vaccinated seventh graders rose 82%, according to The Virginian-Pilot’s analysis of VDH data. Some Hampton Roads school districts saw an increase of more than 90%, with one as high as 99%.

Schools report vaccination status of students to VDH at kindergarten and seventh grade milestones through the department’s Student Immunization Survey, which is collected at the beginning of each school year.

It’s that time of year when the weather gets cooler and the leaves on the trees start changing colors. It’s also that time of year for The Daily Break’s annual bazaar guide to the many arts and crafts fairs around Hampton Roads and beyond. COVID-19 is still a concern for many; please check before attending, as events might change with coronavirus guidelines.

The first thing Leslie Frazier remembers from working with Ron Rivera and Sean McDermott was being stuck in the basement of Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium, and the “varmints,” as he called them, lurking around every corner.

“We were doing our best kind of to work around them, sic cats on them as much as we could,” the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator said with a laugh, reflecting back to 1999 when they worked on Andy Reid’s first staff with the Eagles. “We were all just fending for ourselves back in those days.”

Those early survival skills paid off handsomely. No longer working in dingy basements, they will find themselves on opposing sidelines Sunday, when the McDermott-coached Bills (1-1) face Rivera’s Washington Football Team (1-1).

After six years in business, Bubba’s Shrimp Shack has arrived in South Hampton Roads.

Colburn “Cole” Crockett founded the quick-service seafood restaurant in Gloucester in December 2015. Three other locations in York County, Urbanna, and Tappahannock quickly followed in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively.

The founder and his family opened a fifth restaurant Sept. 7 in Virginia Beach. Crockett’s sister, Joey Turbeville, owns the restaurant at 5600 Virginia Beach Blvd. and her daughter, Kendall Turbeville, is the general manager.
