MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! Where we've been talking about Halloween and the season changing to fall for a few weeks now.  Meanwhile - as we muddle through 80F+ temperatures - many of us are wondering REALLY? Well, how many have taken a peek at the Hampton Roads forecast for the coming week?? I know, yours truly shouldn't jinx it but - high temps in the 60s??  One step closer in justifying pumpkin-spiced lattes, I suppose!

Enough with the weather - how many have heard the great news about yet ANOTHER Hampton Roads local hero?  Of late there have been many local stars from a number of industries/professions.  I think we would all agree that the teaching profession is often a thankless, often overlooked profession.  A profession that has a significant impact on shaping young minds for our future.  Well, we're fortunate to have Virginia's 2022 Teacher of The Year - right here in Hampton Roads!  Announced earlier today(Friday), The Pilot's Ali Sullivan brings us the report on Chesapeake's Daphne Fulson.  Daphne is a second-grade teacher at Portlock Elementary in the Chesapeake City Public School system.  Congratulations to Daphne!  So wonderful to shine the light on positive news and fellow citizens right here in Hampton Roads.

We may very well have a future film producer as a star as well.  Josh Jason from Virginia Beach got investors from here in Hampton Roads to fund his feature film "The Wheel".  Ends up the film was selected for the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.  If you missed it, The Pilot's Saleen Martin has the coverage right here for you.

How many of us have actually stopped at the McDonald's down at the Oceanfront as we've come off of Interstate 264?  Yes, you know that McDonald's.  If we've not stopped there - we've SURELY seen THAT McDonald's.  Now to find out it will be closing??  This coming Monday no less!  Change is becoming more frequent down at the Oceanfront it seems.  The Pilot's Stacy Parker has everything you need to know right here. Speaking of change down at the Oceanfront - the two wind turbines sitting off the coast of Virginia Beach has garnered news in the past year.  There's many more to come as well.  Did you check out who else seems to love those turbines?  Check out The Pilot's Katherine Hafner's write up - right here, on how marine life have reacted to the two wind turbines.

While community festivals are still a bit slow to come back from COVID so far, did you hear about the new festival that will take place down at ODU starting this evening and running through Sunday?  You might want to check out the "Museum of The Moon" festival down on 43rd Street in Norfolk. The Pilot's Saleen Martin has all the details right here for you.  Enjoy!

Yes, I know the contests!  As we all gear up for Halloween - these gift cards should do the "trick"!

COMING SUNDAY:

Ralph Northam said the past year has moved so fast, he hasn't had time for a lot of personal things. But when the Democrat, the only governor who is also a medical doctor, leaves office in three months, he'll finally seek medical advice for his long COVID symptoms, the loss of his taste and smell.

Virginia Beach has joined school boards in at least four other states in the debate over what books should be allowed in school libraries.

Amid the outcry against teaching critical race theory, Virginia Beach is one of the latest divisions to join the debate over which books students should have access to in school libraries. School board members challenged six books earlier this month, citing what they called sexually explicit and divisive language.

This kind of argument isn’t new - those who track the debates over books say the first happened decades ago. But in some recent cases challenges seemingly focus on literature highlighting experiences among people from marginalized communities.

Sam Dreyfus has known his friend Josh Jason since they were kids.

Both grew up in Virginia Beach, their families knew each other, and Dreyfus watched his friend go from a film student in Boston to a producer in Los Angeles.

Recently, Dreyfus invested money to help Jason produce his first feature film, “The Wheel.” He wasn’t the only one.

The indie film was selected for the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival last month and it was bankrolled solely by Hampton Roads investors.

Pandemic-induced lifestyle changes and a hot Hampton Roads seller’s market increased the need for people to stash their stuff — causing self-storage facilities to fill up in Hampton Roads.

While industry experts refer to death, divorce, downsizing and dislocation as the main reasons people rent storage, COVID played a huge role the past two years.

The pandemic’s effects may have accelerated demand for facilities, but the sector was already growing. U.S. self storage square footage grew 4% in 2020 and 9% over the past five years, to more than 1.5 billion square feet of space, according to data from online storage broker StorageCafe.com.

Jonathan Allen does not mince words about Washington’s defense failing to live up to expectations.

“The defense has been absolutely horrible this year,” he said.

Kansas City’s has not been much better. The Chiefs are the only team to allow more points than Washington this season, each defense is among the worst in the NFL, and the 2-3 teams face off Sunday for what could be a touchdown-filled shootout.
