Amid the outcry against teaching critical race theory, Virginia Beach is one of the latest divisions to join the debate over which books students should have access to in school libraries. This kind of argument isnât new - those who track the debates over books say the first happened decades ago. Pandemic-induced lifestyle changes and a hot Hampton Roads sellerâs market increased the need for people to stash their stuff â causing self-storage facilities to fill up in Hampton Roads. While industry experts refer to death, divorce, downsizing and dislocation as the main reasons people rent storage, COVID played a huge role the past two years. The pandemicâs effects may have accelerated demand for facilities, but the sector was already growing. U.S. self storage square footage grew 4% in 2020 and 9% over the past five years, to more than 1.5 billion square feet of space, according to data from online storage broker StorageCafe.com.
