Virginia Beach has joined school boards in at least four other states in the debate over what books should be allowed in school libraries. Amid the outcry against teaching critical race theory, Virginia Beach is one of the latest divisions to join the debate over which books students should have access to in school libraries. School board members challenged six books earlier this month, citing what they called sexually explicit and divisive language. This kind of argument isnât new - those who track the debates over books say the first happened decades ago. But in some recent cases challenges seemingly focus on literature highlighting experiences among people from marginalized communities. Pandemic-induced lifestyle changes and a hot Hampton Roads sellerâs market increased the need for people to stash their stuff â causing self-storage facilities to fill up in Hampton Roads. While industry experts refer to death, divorce, downsizing and dislocation as the main reasons people rent storage, COVID played a huge role the past two years. The pandemicâs effects may have accelerated demand for facilities, but the sector was already growing. U.S. self storage square footage grew 4% in 2020 and 9% over the past five years, to more than 1.5 billion square feet of space, according to data from online storage broker StorageCafe.com.
