MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter!  Where we now welcome in Tax Free Weekend.  This is already an early sign that school is right around the corner!  Parents may be cheering and grade school kids may be groaning.  Regardless, doesn't it feel like the July 4th weekend was just yesterday?  Heck, even Memorial Day weekend feels like it just passed.

As we stay in the moment though and enjoy as much of the summer as we can, we will always have local stories covering the Outer Banks.  The wild horses down in Corolla have always been popular - especially for those of us here in Hampton Roads that have frequented the Outer Banks.  Did you hear about the lonely wild horse that wandered by itself for weeks recently?  If you missed it, The Pilot's Kari Pugh has the entire story right here. Yes, she finally found her way back to her harem.

Keeping with the Outer Banks - there's always plenty of summer storms that kick up down that way.  If you missed the photos of a local photographer capturing water spouts off of Ocracoke Island - catch the story and photos right here by The Pilot's Kari Pugh.

Speaking of Tax Free weekend, I'm sure many of us here in Hampton Roads spent some time back-to-school shopping at Military Circle Mall in the past.  Sad to hear this week that most of the mall will be demolished.  The Pilot's Trevor Metcalfe has the story right here, if you missed it. Times do change, I suppose.

Summer is definitely a time for baseball.  How about the local Norfolk Fleet Park Senior League team playing for the United States championship Friday night??  The Pilot's Ray Nimmo has the preview and coverage of the local team right here. We can all check them out on ESPN+.  Quite an accomplishment by some local high school baseball players throughout Hampton Roads.

Lastly - and keeping with the local sports theme - there could be another shakeup in the postseason classes for local high schools if a plan before the VHSL is adopted in September.  The Pilot's/Daily Press Sonny Dearth has coverage of the possible realignment right here.

COMING SUNDAY:

Across Hampton Roads, historic Black cemeteries are filled with some of the most important members of the region’s history. But how well their graves are treated depends on what jurisdiction they fall under.

Some cemeteries are privately owned or abandoned and left in the hands of volunteer groups. With inconsistent funding and workers, upkeep can end up hit or miss.

Others land in cities that take responsibility for their maintenance. City-owned cemeteries can still be flooded with preservation problems but end up with consistent, perpetual care.

For years, a piece of city-owned land sat dormant on McLean Street in Portsmouth. The property was large — a little over 31 acres — but it needed work and took a long time to sell. Finally, after one deal fell apart, another developer appeared: the Miller Group, a Virginia Beach company that plans to put nearly 200 townhomes on the site.

And the city’s economic development authority gave the new buyer a much better price. It sold the land for a fraction of its assessed value — less than a fourth what the earlier buyer was going to pay and about $380,000 less per acre than the agency sold nearby land for a new casino. And afterward, the city assessor slashed the assessed value of the land by nearly 50% — an unusual move that went outside typical Portsmouth assessment practices. But those involved with the controversial deal, which was cited as one of the reasons for City Manager Angel Jones’ firing, defend it by pointing to the expected tax revenue of about $730,000 a year.

Friendship leads to caregiving

A look. A touch. A coy smile. An inside joke.

That is all Julia, 21, and Tyme, 25, need to express their thoughts to each other.

Julia has been Tyme’s caregiver for the past year. But they have been friends for 15.

They met at the Ability Center of Virginia (formerly Cerebral Palsy of Virginia), a nonprofit aimed at helping people with different abilities lead happy and productive lives.

Julia was 6 when she first volunteered as a peer buddy. Tyme was 10 and attending her first summer camp.

Julia’s mother, Michelle, is the executive director of the Virginia Beach-based program and had a feeling that her daughter would hit it off with Tyme. They did.

Would it really be summer without Barack Obama’s summer reading list?

The former president has released his 2022 picks for the summer season, and Gloucester author S.A. Cosby’s hit novel is on it.

“I’ve read a couple of great books this year and wanted to share some of my favorites so far,” Obama wrote on Instagram July 26. “What have you been reading this summer?”

The novel by Cosby, “Razorblade Tears,” involves two formerly incarcerated men — one Black, one white — who are seeking to avenge the deaths of their sons, who were married to each other.

Since its founding in 1996, Raising Cane’s has kept its concept simple.

Its menu and brand are centered around a classic favorite: chicken fingers.

“We serve what we call a perfect box — quality chicken finger meals, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, coleslaw and creamy Cane’s sauce,” said Dustin Shearer, Raising Cane’s vice president of company restaurants.

Two new roughly 4,000-square-foot Raising Cane’s are under construction in Hampton Roads. Each location, featuring a 100-seat dining room and double lane drive-thru, will bring about 150 jobs to the area.
