MY READER REWARDS

We Love Our Subscribers!

Welcome to your weekly Reader Rewards newsletter! YES - we are back after an unexpected one week hiatus.  No - none of us here at Reader Rewards won tickets to an NCAA basketball tournament site!  Nor were we at the Oscar's Sunday night, so we couldn't have tackled Will Smith at the last second.  Ok - no more on THAT topic this week, right??

Given the recent run-up in gas prices at the pump, we very well could have been waiting in line for a special sale on gas.  Such as the giveaway this weekend in Portsmouth!  If you missed it, catch the story by The Pilot's Caitlyn Burchett right here.  $20,000 gas giveaway??  Yours truly might head over there NOW.

It's been awhile since we've spoken of COVID-19 here - especially since all has turned well in a significant way in recent weeks.  Positive cases are down, hospitalizations are down, deaths are down.  Vaccinations are up.  There's sure to be more variants on the horizon though.  The Daily Press' Dave Ress has coverage on the newest variant right here. For those not vaccinated - still something to give serious consideration.  Same for those not yet boosted.  All else fails, you know the refrain:  wash hands frequently, keep six feet of distance and wear a mask!

This weekend The Final Four is upon us.  That went by quickly, didn't it??  No sooner than that and it's baseball season!  The Tides appear to have a roster stacked with pitching talent.  Be sure to check out the preview by The Pilot's David Hall right here.  Could The Orioles possibly see light at the end of a very dark tunnel with all this talent?  Or is that another headlight of an oncoming train??  Guess we'll see!

We'll close out this week's newsletter paying honor to a co-worker that sadly passed away as a result of violence two weeks ago.  Sierra Jenkins has been covering the education beat for Hampton Roads just over the past year.  Hampton Roads, Virginia Media and journalism in general has lost an up and coming star.  The Pilot's Kim O'Brien Root has a profile of Sierra that is worth the read if you've not already read it.  You can read up on it right here.  R.I.P.  Sierra.

COMING SUNDAY:

Newlyweds Jennifer and Thomas Karnes tried to sweeten every deal to make themselves stand out in Hampton Roads’ tight real estate market.

The couple waived home inspections, made full-price offers without contingencies, offered escalation clauses thousands of dollars over asking price and 100% of closing costs, wrote “love” letters, sent preapproval letters in lieu of pre-qualification letters and even offered one seller $100 worth of bitcoin.

Instead, they were outbid countless times, told by a real estate agent that “VA loans are trash,” and were met with repeated frustration and disappointment until finally successfully closing a deal.

‘Multiple bids on each house’

Liz Moore, board president of the regional Real Estate Information Network, said it’s no secret that residential home inventory has been and remains low from Williamsburg to the North Carolina line — and across the entire country.

The number of homes for sale in Hampton Roads has been dropping year over year. Buyers had roughly 2.5 times more options on the market in February 2020 than this past February, or 6,596 active listings compared with 2,501 listings, according to REIN data. The number of homes for sale dropped by 25% from 3,350 in February last year.

Mia Reid woke up at 7 on a January morning with an idea that just couldn’t wait.

“I wanna do a fashion show back home,” the Virginia Beach native messaged her friend. And, she reported later, “Instead of telling me to roll back over and go to sleep, she said, ‘Let’s do it,’ and we have been moving ever since.”

Her “Back to the Beach” show will be April 9 at the Virginia Beach Wedding Company. It has already sold out.

In 2017, Reid was one of five winners in Belk’s annual Southern Designer Showcase, and her collection was sold in stores and online.

Reid has lived in Atlanta for 15 years, but the 757 has always been part of her brand. Her pieces are named after streets in Virginia Beach.

The portrayal of Indigenous people in America has existed as a paradox for too long, says Kody Grant.

Native Americans are described as Thomas Jefferson did in the Declaration of Independence as “merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.” Or, they are cast as wholly loving, eco-activists.

Grant, lead interpreter in Colonial Williamsburg’s American Indian Initiative, soon will take on a more significant role to tell a more complete story of Native American life in the 18th-century living museum. He was recently named the first American Indian historical figure in CW’s popular Nation Builder program. He will portray Chota Oconostota, a prominent member of the Cherokee Nation and a part of a delegation that came to Williamsburg in 1777.
