WHAT TO WATCH

Baby — Shocking But True.

This Netflix series recently got a second season, despite initial pushback against the premise, which has two girls at an elite Roman high school turn to prostitution to buy designer clothes. It’s actually based on a true story, but we’ll stick to the fictional version.

The Chaperone — Backstory to History.

Downton Abbey star Elizabeth McGovern shines here as chaperone to a young Louise Brooks, a dancer who became a silent screen legend. This moving film is an extraordinary meditation on the roles of women at a time when they were in flux, with a middle-aged woman getting a chance to see life through a modern young upstart’s eyes.

Thought Leader — Gentle Satire.

Look, you love TED Talks, we love TED Talks, who doesn’t love TED Talks? But more than that, we love hilarious, pointed satire, and that’s what Canadian comedian Pat Kelly does best. Take a look at his sendup of a TED Talk … then watch it again.

WHAT TO READ

The Infinite Game — Know When to Play.

There are two types of games: finite and infinite. A finite game, like chess, has an end. An infinite one, like politics, can never truly be won (or lost). This fascinating book discusses the latter type — and delves into how people often act like they’re playing a finite game when they aren’t … to their own detriment.

House of Stone — A Memoir of Syria.

New York Times bureau chief Anthony Shadid won two Pulitzers and survived a kidnapping in Libya before dying of an asthma attack at the age of 43. This is his story about returning to and rebuilding his family’s house in southern Lebanon, a subject that weaves in Shadid’s fascinating family history (and that of the entire region).

WHAT TO COOK

Eleven Madison Park Granola — Just That Good.

We know what you’re thinking, because it’s what we were thinking: How good can granola actually be? And the answer is: SO good. So good! The mix of sweet and salty is just perfect, it doesn’t take a thousand years to make and you don’t have to go to the swank New York restaurant where it originated to get it. Seriously, if you want to give us a cheap Christmas present, just make a few batches and mail it to our office. Stock up on pistachios, pumpkin seeds and dried cherries, then follow this link to the recipe.

AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T DO THIS:

Cry over … you know. A tanker truck filled with sweetened condensed milk went over a guardrail in Southern California early Monday morning, spilling 6,000 gallons of milk. Two lanes of traffic were closed while highway crews pumped the sweet treat off the road.
