Russian Doll — ‘Groundhog Day’ for a New Generation.

God, it’s good to see Natasha Lyonne again. The millennial icon co-created this Netflix series, which stars Lyonne as a woman trying to figure out why she keeps reliving the same day over and over.

Project Blue Book — The Truth Is Out There!

The main danger with this History Channel series about a real-life U.S. project to study UFOs in the 1950s is that you’ll miss plot points while frantically googling everything they mention. And it would be a shame to miss a minute of this gripping drama, so keep your finger on the pause button.

Sacred Games — Gritty Mumbai Noir.

In Netflix’s first Indian original series, a gangster, played by the versatile, brilliant Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and a struggling cop attempt to work together to save the city. Don’t sleep on the background score, which really elevates it to the next level.

WHAT TO LISTEN TO

Insanely Good — Going Crazy.

Ever wondered why some charged with murder or maiming get off scot-free by pleading insanity while others don’t? OZY’s new season of The Thread explores how some of history’s most notorious criminal defendants, from Aurora killer James Holmes and Lorena Bobbitt to John Hinckley Jr., are linked by a common thread: the insanity defense. Learn new things about each case and decide for yourself whether the insanity plea has a place in modern-day justice. This is storytelling at its very best.

Outer Peace — Indie Groove.

Toro Y Moi (aka Chaz Bear) has gone from lo-fi to disco to fun rock and come out the other side with this awesome album of slickly produced groove and perfect features from WET and Instupendo. Every track is a winner, at once laid-back and kind of dancey, with lyrics filled with recession generation in-jokes. Pro tip: The track Freelance, with its weird chorus of “acks,” is probably the most exciting thing you can possibly sing along to while working from home.

WHERE TO TRAVEL

Matera, Italy — The City of Caves.

Just a few decades ago, this ancient city was known for being a squalid, impoverished pocket of Italy, with high child mortality and families living in tiny caves. Now the town has been transformed, and a lot of those caves are available to vacationers who want to experience a bit of holiday spelunking.  

While Matera has a huge number of Airbnbs — a 2017 report found a higher proportion of its real estate was on Airbnb than anywhere else in Italy — be sure to check out the Sextantio Hotel’s rooms, which are located in caves carved into the side of a mountain. It’s tough to get more romantic than a candlelit cave … or is that just for those of us who grew up on Phantom of the Opera?

Let man’s real best friend get away. Chinese officials say they’ve cloned an exceptional police sniffer dog, nicknamed “the Sherlock Holmes of police dogs,” as part of a program aimed at reducing the costs of identifying and training such animals. The new puppy, named Kunxun, is now in training to see if sleuthing skills are in his blood.
